My old boss and mentor used to say " perfection is our goal, excellence will be tolerated " . Ken Crocker is no longer with us, but I'm 53 years old and i think back to lessons learnt.

Just wanted to point out. Your playlist of building a house from start to finish is still one of the most valuable pieces of information on YT. I have a personal hard backup of the series and it'll be my reference source for when me and my two boys get started on a project like this.

My grandpa rolled over in his grave when you cut that string line. I can still remember 30 years ago when i side pulled a 16d nail, the amount of grief he gave me because of bending the nail...."how the hell are we going to straighten that nail out?"

Letting yourself getting progressively more perfect is the best advice I have ever heard for new people getting into this kind of work.

Dad was a homebuilder in the 60's - 70's. These vids show me what he would have been doing back then.

When we layout for new slabs we just pull a string line for the most important side, calculate the hypotenuse, hook a long tape on each stake on the key side and cross them at the middle of the tape. You instantly have the two other stake points and the whole thing is square. I’ve rough laid out slabs like this and when we do the exact layout with the laser transit they are almost spot on.

My boss was telling me about how he watched a video about making parallel lines and based upon how he described the methods I knew it was you, even though I hadn't watched this video yet.

Brilliant video. Genuinely never thought of the shortest measurement being square to the other peg. Such a time saver. I was always messing about with 3-4-5

Hah. I was building a little deck for an elderly couple with this other guy, who was technically my boss, because he was the contractor and I was the helper. He had the idea that we should install 9 posts to hold up the deck. That seemed reasonable. But then he just wanted to start digging holes and putting in posts and I said, "Wait a second. What we need to do is put "batter boards" outside the deck area and pull strings to make sure we have straight lines." He wanted to do it the quick way, so we did . Then, when it came time to put in the posts, they didn't line up. He asked, "How did this turn out so wrong?" I just looked at him.
