I used to work with a crane operator that people would ask, all the time, "What time is it?". He would take off his hard hat and hold it up to the sun, take a look at the shadow, Look back up at the sun and then nail it every time. He had a watch without the band taped to the inside of his hard hat.....lol.

Your actions reinforce your identity, and your identity reinforces your actions. Decide the kind of person you want to be--a runner, a good dad, a hard worker--and start the virtuous cycle.

SO happy to see and listen to this episode! Literally just bought my first pair of trail shoes because a friend invited me to run with his group. Thanks for all this advice! “Our pace changes but our workload stays the same” 💡💪🏼

I live in Houston, home of the mostly flat marathon. I completed 2 marathons. It took me about 5 years of training before running my first marathon. I finished in a little over 4 hours. Then I got a personal trainer for 6 months to get stronger abd improve my time.
Unfortunately, I overtrained.
I caught a bad cold and went to the doctor. They gave me antibiotics and prednisone because I told them I trained for this marathon on Sunday and plan to run it if possible.
Yes, I felt well enough to start the marathon...at least no more fever and no lightheadedness.
I took it easy so I could finish.
At the 20 mile major aid station, I had terrible diarrhea. I hung out a half hour there to get to the place of feeling like I could continue.
Fortunately, I finished 20 minutes faster than my first marathon.
I thought it could have been at least a 50 minute improvement if I hadn't gotten stuck at 20 miles.
I never walked once in either marathon.
A month before my 2nd marathon, I ran 30 miles on a treadmill at the gym...not because it was necessary training but because of my enthusiasm (or addiction 😅).
OMG, this set me back physically and mentally and I steered clear of any running events.
I was 42 at the time.
Now I'm 74.
I still love running but keep it to 6 mile doses a few times a week prefering to keep it fresh.
Maybe I'll try an Ultra without overtraining this time.
My park has a 3 mile crushed granite loop and I plan to check out Altra trail shoes.

What an EPISODE! I was not able to finish this episode at once without going out for a run right in the Middle where Scott and Don were talking about discipline and motivation. Thank you, Mr. Gierman!

The whole point of trail is not having cars and people around. Most introverts are on the trail. A lot more solo runners in the mountains. Good podcast
