What If Comfort Isn’t Harmless?

I sit at a desk , in a comfortable, atmosphere controlled environment - tied to a computer for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week - and can attest that if I didn't have any physical work to do in my garden that my brain would be mush. By the end of the working week, I am so exhausted that I don't feel like doing anything but sleeping to recover - which is not a good way of living life to the full - I am SO looking forward to retiring next year so I can be a lot more physically active and to give my brain (& body) a much needed relief from the mundane work life!!
I love watching what you and your wife have created on your land - it is very inspiring, as are the topics you discuss... I hope your veggies grow plentiful and huge this year!!

As a species the comfort stage is closely followed by decline and then collapse (read Freire). I think it applies equally to individuals. Living outside of our comfort zone is critical to survival and it doesn't have to be physical btw. Thanks as always for your video sir.

Physical work in the garden doesn't make me tired. The more i do, the more i want to do.

After retiring from a career driving a comfy car around the UK, I now find myself doing physical work on a daily basis. Its a love-hate relationship with my garden. Then, I realise making several portions of soup to freeze at once is not only highly productive and nutritious but far more rewarding than buying a tin of salt laden slosh from a supermarket. Those chickens are plotting a tunnel btw.

As good old Nietzsche said “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger “. I’ve recently heard these lifestyle comforts referred to as “carpeted corners”. It’s much like inner shadow work, where you don’t want to look is where you need to go. Great video 👍

I like the word gudgeon too!…sailing…rudders….
I’m older…. learning to knit which means measuring, counting, constantly trying new techniques, etc. My memory has improved significantly. I’m learning new stuff faster. I really enjoyed this video!

From what I can see of your lifestyle I would call it extremely comfortable, although many would see it as hardship. I recently left a job in a large organisation which has caused some anxiety and uncertainty but the feeling of being more in control of my own life is hugely comforting. Stealing from many other people's thoughts it's the difference between comfort as a state - delivered by consumption altering our material conditions - to comfort as a practice which is largely created within ourselves. I believe the latter is what we should be aiming for. Thanks for the vid!

6:21 it is clear what will happen, it was shown in the 2006 film "Idiocracy" we are very close to that state

I play life on the hard setting. I suffer so those around me suffer less.. quite simple if you want to be the tip of the spear you're going to cop the biggest beating.. If you do it enough you begin to love the beatings they give you strength and confidence which makes hard situations not so difficult anymore. I now love the pain because I know others aren't strong enough to even consider handling it in one piece while I sail through.

They say hard work never killed anybody. As a 70-year-old that worked hard all my life, l am still here, so maybe that's true. However, if that hard work caused stress, which it did in my case, it definitely can harm and eventually kill you. So the question is, how to work hard without getting stressed?

Living in a small space can incentivise you to find outside space chores. It can also mean you need less stuff…it’s called living within your limits , a very comfortable place to be if you can stop the forever getting something else habit. And Good brain health comes from good gut health..fresh kefir milk every other day is an easy way, and stops indigestion too. Tai chi time is a superb way to find balance, peace and strength. Work smarter or harder..stop the weeds from growing or keep weeding, so many choices. Great garden. NZ is a top spot to live, it’s where the Wall Street wizard John Bender was for a short time, he had too much time and money.
