How do you feel about Resident Evil 4? 🎮

The least realistic thing about Resident Evil 4 is that a US corporation was punished by government for killing millions of people.

Each new RE retrospective gets longer than the last, what a blessing.

I love that RE4 almost feels like its own genre in-between survival horror and medieval fantasy. While modern espionage, occultism and capitalism are combined to create a believable and effective story.

Agents, spies, terrorists, occultists and vagrants are all at odds with one another. As the village itself is a long standing conspiracy that holds the power of a new deterrence.

The game almost plays out moreso as a pseudo 007 story, as Leon a super agent and Ada a superspy find themselves up against medieval and modern enemies to stop a doomsday scenario. Which is truly the main theme of the game in my opinion. It was always about preventing Las Plagas, the next deterrent from reaching ground zero.

Especially through Ada’s perspective we see that Saddler’s plan was never going to be successful, it was the bioweapons industry that was vying for control over Las Plagas and its manufacturing that truly was at play.

That’s why the Remake emphasized more on the Sample/Amber and the deposits beneath the castle. Along with Umbrella researching it through their sixth laboratory. RE4 is more than just about a modern knights tale, it’s about the implications of extracting a long lost deterrent for weapons manufacturing.

As someone that's beaten RE4 in the triple digits or so in the last 20 years it's pretty perfect and while I think the remake outpaces it in several areas simply because gaming has changed a lot in 2 decades (and the removal of QTEs and making the Island an actual tolerable and fun segment goes a long way), you really cannot escape the impact that RE4 had on not only the franchise, but also the video game industry as a whole. Simply put there was a time before RE4's release and a time after. It's impossible to ignore its impact that's still felt today.

There's a reason for that QTE issue; Because the game was made for 30fps gameplay, 60fps gameplay shortens the QTE time by just enough that the failure rate goes up by a noticeable degree, even changing timings that can prevent Leon from dying to Dr. Salvador. The HD Project mod includes a list of QoL fixes that resolve this issue.

Waking up in the village (47:04) always felt like an accurate depiction of how it feels to accidentally fall asleep during the day and wake up in the night IRL. You're disoriented by the sudden change from day to night, and the world has moved on as usual in your absence.

I remember reading Nintendo Power right as this game came out, memorizing all of the maps, hints, and strategies so that when I finally got my hands on this game, I would be able to get overcome my fear and complete Leon's journey.

I will never forget the day I popped that minidisc into my gamecube, plugged it into my 27" triniton CRT, and first heard that title screen music.

That feeling of walking through the woods, feeling a sense of familiarity from the pictures and guides I had consumed. My parents had gone on vacation and let me stay home alone for the weekend. I screamed when the chainsaw tore through my neck. I laughed at the corny dialogue. I gawked at the insane graphics.

This was my favorite game for many years, I will remember my experience with it until I am no more. What an impactful moment on the future of gaming. Good times.

I've been gaming for over 30 years and the best experience I've ever had was playing Reisdent Evil 4 remake for the first time in VR. Getting to fight Krauser in a physical knife fight made me grin so hard my face hurt.

It's crazy to think that this is still probably the most advanced third person shooter in terms of how well made it's core game design is, despite being arguably the first true third person shooter. It's firmly rooted in the japanese arcade era of design. Pretty much every attack is telegraphed, giving you the chance to avoid it if you know what you're doing.

On top of that, it is basically a beat-em-up style game like streets of rage, but played in third person over the shoulder and with projectile weapons. It's all about crowd control, enemy type prioritisation, and creating / capitalising on moments where huge damage is possible with use of the smallest amount resources necessary. To this day it still has one of the most interactive-feeling worlds in third person shooters. And it's interactive in ways that are meaningful for the core pillars of exploration, light puzzle solving and combat.

The original might not have the best story, and the remake might have lost some of the gameplay polish, but overall it's not difficult to argue that in terms of single player experiences, these games stand at the top. It was revolutionary for it's time and continues to be both influential and current because it brings in the new without forgetting the old and synthesizes them together. It brings together the rigorously fair, tightly honed, and mechanically deep gameplay of the arcade era, with new technologies and advancements such as 3d space, great graphics and animations, and great cinematics.

Even with all this said, it's still scratching the surface of everything the original game does right. It truly is a game from the future, and is still futuristic even now, 20 years after release.
