I read all of his books as a boy. Mr. Burgett always reminded me of my father who was 18, scared, but did what was expected of him. Truly, these boys 'set the standards' on how all young men should lead their lives. By far, the GREATEST.
Thanks Erik, JD, and especially, Mark Bando for his generosity!!!!

My uncle was at Normandy with the Canadians. He just celebrated his 101st Birthday in 2026! I have utmost respect for him. Cheers.

Don Burgett's recall of events is amazing, considering the trauma he experienced. Many veterans I have known over the years suppress the memories or never talk about their experiences. Thank you to Don and other veterans who do share that we might know the true history and hope to avoid a repeat of their experiences. Thank you to Erik, JD, and especially Mark Bando for sharing this interview. We must never forget.

Had some interesting conversations with Sgt. Burgett at the old WWII learning Center and Museum in Ohio years ago. Was fortunate enough to get to know him a bit and our photos hang proudly in my office/man cave! RIP sir…

What a wonderful experience listening to these old timers speak of their times in bastone in fighting their way through ..these are memories I know they would not want to do again, but no regrets that they did. These are true heroes.
We owe so much gratitude that can't be explained in words. My father fought on the other side in the Pacific, and it's like listening to my father. I could sit there for hours taking in these stories and just only imagining what would it be like to be in their shoes.. I want to thank each and every one of you guys for everything you gave to this country. So that we can have the benefits that we so adore today.. Thank you and God bless you all!!!

My great uncle was a waist gunner on a B-17. I never met him. My neighbor was a Filipino geurilla who fought on Bataan. Occasionally, after drinking a bit too much ( which I absolutely can't fault at all ), he would ramble a bit incoherently but I don't think he was awake. You could tell that in his mind he was still suffering there in the jungle. After the war he was allowed to join the Army and he retired as a Staff Sergeant. Thank you, Mr San Luis and all the rest of you veterans who served before me.

As anyone who studies history knows war is hell but also provides some really funny stories. In this book the exchange with black trooper who left the perimeter to defecate being challenged on his way back is hillarious.
