  I was born in ‘91, we used to wear shoelaces as belts in the early ‘00s not as a trend but because belts break and you have shoelaces on you. It was used because it’s what we had. We were jobless highschool kids. It’s also why we skated bones reds. It’s what we could afford.

  Using a shoelace as a belt has always been a thing but I think it became a trend that was hated on when places like Zumiez started selling shoelace belts

  90s were the best, no phones, just living in the moment. I still enjoi watching all the crazy skate videos people post today. It’s so gnarly to see how far skateboarding has progressed.

  I&apos;m old, and was skating in the early 90&apos;s, and all the 90s trends mentioned here happened all at once, around 1991/1992, all for the same/ interconnected reasons.<br><br>The tiny wheels, the giant pants, the skinny &quot;paddlepop stick&quot; boards, for a while, even the whole idea of flip tricks was seen as a trend. But they were all downstream results of the shift from wide, 80&apos;s &quot;fishtail&quot; boards &nbsp;with a short nose, and where the nose and tail were totally different, to the &quot;double kick&quot; decks that everyone&apos;s used since the early 90&apos;s, where nose and tail are virtually symmetrical.<br><br>With 80s, fishtail decks, kickflips were just barely possible, but any variation beyond a basic kickfip was near-impossible for your average skater. And having a board that always had to face the same way, coz the nose was only like two inches past your front baseplate, really limited what tricks were possible. Thats why a huge amount of 80s tricks were just different grabs.<br><br>So when that double-kick shape came in around 1991, instantly the old short-nose fishtail decks were obselete, and there was a really sudden, massive shift in the tricks people did, because of the new possibilities the double-kick shape introduced. &nbsp;Basically all the kickflip/heelflip variants that have dominated street skating ever since then, and stuff like shove-its and nollie variants, that took advantage of the fact your nose was now a second kicktail.<br><br>And the tiny wheels were a direct result of the entire scene discovering the kickflip, all at once. <br><br>Same with the giant pants, which were about the flexibility and (relative) fancy footwork needed for all this lateflip, shove-it, impossible stuff, in contrast to the 80s, were you could get away with skating in tight jeans, coz the main tricks were grabs, or different grinds or whatever.<br><br>Its pretty crazy how much, and how suddenly skateboarding changed, in that two years between 1989 and 1991, with the introduction of the double-kick deck, and of all the different kickflip/heelflip variants. Probably the biggest shift in the history of skating.<br><br>But all the 90s trends mentioned, were just the various downstream results of that shift.<br><br>(And &quot;focussing&quot; boards also began in that era, coz (1) the skinnier, double-kick boards were easier to break. 80s fishtail decks were indestructible tanks. And (2) that was also when hamdicams were first getting small/cheap enough for guys to carry, and record sessions. So people snapped boards, showing off for the camera, or getting mad, trying hard, frustrating tricks for the camera)

  I’ve skated in every decade since the late 80s, and I can assure you the best era so far was the 90s. It was a vibe, it was still laughably illegal in town, it was degenerate. Good times

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MRD2ZbkYdU&amp;t=680">11:20</a> me personally I watch this channel called &quot;rose anvil&quot; they make alot of videos breaking down how shoes are made(not just skate shoes), how durable they are, and they even cut them in half. Made me look into new balance skate shoes and even started skating a pair, been holding up good.
