I realized when watching this. When Andy and Red were talking after his 2 months in the hole where Red said that going to Zihuatanejo was a shitty pipe dream. Yet in order to escape to Zihuatanejo he crawled through a 'shitty pipe',so it ended up a successful dream after all.

I love that the camera pulls away from Red and Andys reunion. Two men whos lives have not been their own and had zero real privace for decades, finaly get that moment of privacy as we, the audience, are removed as well....

My favorite aspect of this film is that you never find out what any of the men in prison were convicted of. You just see them as people, which most films that take place in prison do not do. Deep down it makes the viewer look at the prison system and ask if we are doing it the right way. Stephen King is a genius.

15:54 Former prison guard for 7 years here. It's definitely not like that today (mostly). But you'll find that most Correctional Officers (correct term for people who are sticklers for that kind of thing) are there for one of a few reasons: 1. Family legacy, their parents worked at the prison and they just follow in their footsteps. 2. Former or wannabe law enforcement. Guys who either retired from the police force, or were unable to make it in the force for a variety of reasons. 3. The most usual of cases, they need a job and it pays better than fast food and they aren't thinking about manual labor positions.

I started at the prison because I was desperate for work as I was young, married, had one kid and one on the way, and they were offering insurance and a steady paycheck. Ended up staying 7 years because I got used to it. We worked 12 hour shifts, either 6A-6P or the opposite. Our scheduled days were M, Tu, F, Sa one week and Su, W, Th the next. After a while, you get used to basically only working half of the month. Then, once you get to 10 years, you're vested in pension. So, if you stay 20 years, you get a full pension for the rest of your life. It only makes sense to stay that long.

Working in prison is simultaneously the most interesting and the most depressing work you'll probably ever do. There's a reason divorce rates are sky high amongst prison guards. It's hard to not bring work home with you. It's hard to get out of work mode. I got to where I would have problems in crowds on my days off because I never wanted anyone standing behind me. You see horrible, depressing, miserable things almost every day. If you're not the kind of Officer where you just outright hate the convicts, (yes, they have those. No, most of us are not that way. And, yes, we hate the overzealous assholes trying to prove a point just as much as the convicts or people on the outside looking in. They make the job 100x harder because they rile up convicts that are just trying to live their lives behind bars.) then you are inundated with empathy for some of the guys locked up. You'd be surprised how many convicts are just people unable or unwilling to take their psych meds on the outside, so they end up doing something crazy. Then once they're in, we get them on their med schedule and they're suddenly calm and completely normal. Now they have to do time for something that they couldn't control at the time. You also see guys that have committed crimes because they're sick and the state offers basically free healthcare while you're inside. I've taken hundreds of convicts to their weekly/biweekly chemo appointments. They can't afford it, but the state will cover the cost because not covering it falls under "cruel and unusual" punishment.

All that to say, Byron Hadley would have been the captain that no one wanted to work with or work for. At least, not in today's terms. Back in the late 40's, convicts were regarded as trash, so he's probably more spot on for the time.

How beautiful is it that the last words of dialogue are: "I hope."

That the hammer is hidden in the Exodus chapter... details like that make it one of the best movies I've ever seen.

Stephen King has said that this film is better than his novella, for the simple reason that his story didn't have Morgan Freeman in it.
