Great podcast lads, very interesting discussion. For me as an amateur, the thing I love about wildlife photography is being out in the bush, getting up early, grabbing a pre dawn coffee and rusk then heading out looking for tracks and finally coming across an amazing sighting. The challenge and elation of getting the shot in camera is addictive. No amount of AI technology can replicate that feeling. I do like the ease of editing AI allows for but the essence of wildlife photography for me is about capturing the time, the place, the feeling of a sighting. In the professional photography world it’s a lot more complicated when images are your currency.

Glad you continue the podcast :), shame it was a little short this time.
The main aspect for me was mentioned briefly: I enjoy beeing out and taking / making images. Promting an AI image will not give that to me. I am - as you are - very appreciative of the editing help to make the image just a bit cleaner while keeping the image the way it was shot :)
Cheers, Hannes

As nature lovers, there is another ethical question about the use of AI, and that is the immense (and I mean IMMENSE) amount of electricity required to run current and future data centres. Where is the power coming from? In the US the plan is to rely on natural gas and nuclear. US have unveiled plans for a 70billion USD investment into data centres. That’s just the US. In China, they have plans for 40 data centres, in the desert, in the ocean (for cooling), all over the place. Alibaba alone has invested 50bil USD. Why should we care? Well, no electricity comes without an environmental cost…

Really interesting podcast about something that's taking over everywhere!
I find the whole concept of AI quite scary. No clue how to use it in editing which I'm very happy with.
As you say, images created by AI is a completely different type of art but it's not photography imho!

The main thing I don't like about AI is that big tech companies are using everything what we post online to put us out of "business". In the other words you are paying Adobe to remove this blade of grass but they didn't pay for use all of your leopard photos. I don't see how in this equation you can be better off. There is also a huge misunderstanding about the difference between machine learning and AI. Also I recommend listening to the episode of FroKnowsPhoto podcast Jared Vs Tony Northrup, they are talking about this subject to.
And yes I agree that sooner or later you will make an episode complaining about AI ruining it for you.

When I was using a Canon R6 I had no issues shooting at iso 25600, and now that I've returned to micro 4/3(OM-1) I still go up to iso 6400 without worrying much. The noise reduction we have now is SO good

I don’t have a problem with AI in regards to editing i.e. subject/background selection. But that's where it ends. My feeds are now full of images which are 100% AI as well as ridiculous videos. Imo the beauty of art is that it's human. Weather it's photography, videography, drawing, painting, sculpting, music e.c.t. it's someone showing how they see the world through their eyes.

I am not sure how you can draw a cautionary tale about the use of AI to fake a photo, and then use it to create a thumbnail - very few people will read the disclaimer. If the line is real or fake it doesn’t matter if it is just for a thumbnail - AI fakery simply creates false expectations among people of what they can photograph on safari or in other wildlife encounters. It destroys any sense of wonder at truly skilled photographers’ work, as it leads one to question the authenticity of everything. Editing using AI a completely different thing, and not for me an issue.

Question for the two of you, if anyone goes to your websites are you showing any images that you processed and you didn't disclose what you did? What do you think is OK to do for processing an image?

Nice commentary. Maybe we need to learn to accept that the image with the blade of grass running through the face is OK and is still a wonderful image. l wish that when images are posted or shown anywhere that the maker would disclose what they did. Then we could decide if we (as consumers) want that or not.

Just when I thought we ( wildlife photographers ) were finally finished with the " straight out of the camera no cropping or editing" like it was some kind of a badge of honor even though most times you could tell it was "straight" out of the camera( she said a bit snarky), now we get accused of using AI to make our images something the photographer really didn't capture. In the States, in competition , if you are caught using AI to add or subtract something from a scene you will be banned from competing for 2 years, not including the editing tools like noise reduction and sharpening that are AI driven. As with too much of a good thing in life, AI will eventually become a spoiler of things as you both mentioned in the podcast... people believe the stupidest and most unlikely scenes in wildlife photography. Not hard to understand seeing what they all believe in my country coming from the leader. ... and yes, that was out right snarky. Like Lance , I too, will block sites, groups, on Facebook that are overtly AI and pass it off as real. Great podcast to get the discussion going on where wildlife photography is headed with advancements in AI. Cheers!
