Best kept secret of jazz school is how jazz gigs actually work: you make $1 per tune you know. Great advice!

Very helpful. There’s still a lot of work but knowing that you really need to know the tune well and that there’s a limited number of chord progressions involved is a real insight.

Good job! I would have freaked out at this when I was 20. It would have changed my life.
The next step is to learn some of them so well that you can concentrate on your performance. Make your phrasing great and emotional instead of passable. Feel the room and improvise to the mood, or to get attention back. What does your face look like? Those parts are where the greats get great. Also, smoke and drink a little if you trust Sarah Vaughn.

Thanks for this. I've been playing (and singing jazz) for years and whilst I have been aware of the patterns ie ii V I, I still have issues with remembering and understanding how these tunes work and basically concluded that I just don't have a jazz brain. It just all seemed to confusing. However, the first basic chart you showed made sense and it's given me a bit more confidence to allow my ego mind to tackle this once more. I like your teaching style - it's nice and simple which is what people like myself need. As a teacher myself, your style resonates. I've also always been an advocate for learning melody to see the connection with the chords, plus I think it's necessary for soloing. But that's just how I work. Thanks again and cheers
