Collecting Conundrums- Should We Collect What We Like?

Hi Matt, I really enjoyed this video. I understand what you're saying about wanting to collect cards that you truly love rather than just cards you like. I especially get the part about getting caught up in the deal and then realizing you passed on a card you really wanted. I do my best to be conscious of that and focus on cards that I really want.

I do struggle a little with the “good is the enemy of great” analogy when it comes to collecting, though. I actually think a collection of cards you like can sometimes become something you love.

For example, I like putting together a representative group of cards from different years. I might have 36 cards from a particular Topps set, and I don't necessarily love every card in that group. I actually bought a PSA 1980 Topps Willie Wilson this evening. It's not a card I love, but Wilson was an important player that season and, to me, he helps tell the story of baseball in 1980.

When I put those cards together, though, I love what they become. They give me a snapshot of that season, and the players, designs, photography, and even the lesser stars bring back a certain time and feeling for me.

So I guess I look at my collection a little differently. I'm not trying to make every individual card a great card. I'm trying to create something that I love as a whole.

Good job with this.

Great stuff Matt. The puppy love theory is interesting, and I’m always analyzing my own collecting habits. Because card collecting is so tactile I think that wears off as you move along in the hobby. However, That’s where the card companies have always been able to get their hooks in us. Creating new cards with new images or new designs, old players in new sets, and so on. That taps into that collector psyche that each of us in the hobby have in some form. Once you realize this, and become more at peace with your collecting mentality, the easier it is to pass on puppy love and find the true love…like Buttercup and Wesley😂.
Anybody want a peanut?

I know exactly what you mean with your Kalines. We create these projects for ourselves and then end up trying to fulfill them because it gives us something to buy. In reality, the cards we fall in love with are the ones we can attach to our lives. One of the best pieces of advice I ever heard in this hobby was "every card you don't buy is a card you just sold". Patience is key in building a great collection.

Thanks for the great vid. There’s a lot of what I call “hype noise” in every hobby, and especially with cards. The Hype Noise is associated with the hype and distractions that can take you away from what you really enjoy about the hobby. So much focus is placed on mass ripping and value, that the real value can be overlooked. I’m what I call and “then and now” collector, meaning I collected years ago, and came back to the hobby recently. When I was a kid and young adult collecting, there was no such thing as grading, for example. I did see, however, the growing number of brands and even upscale brands within brands that made me wonder if this was fun anymore. Coming back to the hobby, seeing the size of the boxes compared to my youth, the constant chase for hits, the mass rippers, and the crazy grading market, I made the decision to focus on what makes me happy. The hobby brought me closer to the game, with its deep rooted history, and my love of playing. The hobby still has that same effect on me today, as long as I ignore the hype noise. ⚾️🇺🇸

I can really appreciate the thinking behind whether or not to add a card to your collection. I certainly have not been a very strict buyer at times.

Great points, Matt, and I think it makes for a very interesting discussion. I find a hard time balancing between what I love in my collection and my desire to complete a project. Definitely a balancing act. Appreciate you, sir, as always!
