  My Haitian mother walked blocks in the Miami heat to visit South Miami Senior High every day for weeks to ask if the magnet program had an opening for me. As a result, I went to USC for my undergrad and graduated with a Master’s in UM. My grandmother was illiterate until the day she died. I would never disrespect my mother’s efforts by not providing the best for my future children. In my opinion, I became more radically black experiencing corporate life versus missing it out in school going to PWIs. The world will never stop reminding me I’m black and that I need to stay two times better to get up the ladder.

  We know it’s possible to send our kids to well resourced black or diverse schools right? I’m surprised at how little I’m hearing people point this out. Black is not equal to Poverty

  Jessie I know you and your mom have had problems, but hearing your story on how she wanted you to go to a different better school, made me smile &amp; almost tear up. That&apos;s something I feel a good mother would do, if they can. It gave me another perspective/view of your mom. We as humans are so layered. Thanks for the story!

  That lady did a social experiment with her child! There’s no way I’d do that &amp; if I tried my husband would be looking to get me examined in a psychiatric ward! As an educator, my kids education is top priority!
