I'm the proud owner of a 416 Rugby made by Holland and Holland.

I love the European theory of marksmanship. High power, bolt actions built like tanks, double rifles, wood that looks like ornate furniture. Beauties.

When a charging Cape buffalo or elephant is 20 yards away, you don't need luck—you need a .416 Rigby. Pure mechanical perfection and stopping power.

Kentucky Ballistics uses this (and the 458 Lott) to great effect. It often outperforms much larger calibers. It’s an amazing cartridge

The fact Harry Selby carried a modified 8mm mouser action chambered in 416 Rigby for so long says a lot. The best PH to ever walk the planet chose the 416 and stayed with it.

That's what Spencer Dutton used in the series "1923." It was a double barrel.

.416 Rigby is the parent case of my favorite long range rifle of all time, the .338 Lapua.

Many years ago I went to Rigby's at their south London office and asked if they had any 6.5 x 54MS 140gr sporting ammunition, as I had had a poor experience on a Roe doe with the RWS 160gr round nose failing to expand. They found they had just two 20 round boxes of Hirtenberger, which I bought. However they brought through 6 x 10 round red and yellow Kynoch boxes of 6.5 x 54MS 160gr round nose. They said they believed they might be pre-war, so mercuric primers and to bear this in mind if any of them actually fired, for extra barrel cleaning with boiling water. There was no charge for the Kynoch Ammunition. I later told this story to John Kynoch at Bisley (my sister used to baby sit for John's children in Keith in the 1960's) and he was much amused. John won the moving target shooting Olympic Gold Medal at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. John is still coaching today at Bisley, long after arthritis has ended my shooting days.

Very fair video-good history, Rigby rifle, such as.416 Rigby caliber must continue to exist and evolve as gunsmith and as a trademark, with legacy like that one it's almost an obligation.

I read John Hunter's autobiography as a kid. That book really made an impression on me. I still remember several stories from it including that elephant very clearly 45 years later.
