Except when your straight married crush comes out to you fifteen years later and you finally get him as a 40th birthday present, and then every few years thereafter. 😈

Here’s what I’m going to do: keep falling for the world and life, keep falling for myself and other people too

I’m so glad I came across this video. So I’m a gay man and he’s straight. We first met in September of 2024. I can show you screenshots of all the journal entries I have about him and our highlight moments, but before he came into my life, I never had a romantic relationship or experienced anything romantic with anyone. So when he came into my life I really thought “maybe this can work, maybe he’s the one”. Months and months go by of us spending a lot of time together and hanging out. Fast forward to April of 2026 one night we were hanging out and I decided to be honest with him about my feelings. He took it very well and he said he kinda knew for a while that I had feelings for him. He told me he’s into girls, but he values the friendship and wants to keep it as friends. I told him that I’ll respect that boundary and keep it just friend’s. My head knows I need to let go of US💔 but my heart seems to refuse.

I think what leads to this is a visible lack of gay men and women around us. It pushes us to look at men and say well maybe we'd fit well together. We need to look at this as a societal issue and do what we can to help the younger gay men and women just coming out. The more gays and lesbians out in the world in general the less gay people will fall in love with straight men. It's a long game approach.

I was a young adult during the onset of the AIDS epidemic. As far as I was concerned, gay sex equaled a horrific, lingering certain death. Establishing and maintaining crushes on straight men (with whom I had a strong rapport) fulfilled a need for male companionship. Sexual contact wasn't an option, thus sidestepping the risks of various sexually-transmitted infections. I did eventually declare my "independence" from those dazzling connections (all for the sake of integrity to my "self-worth" and my "truth"). Now I'm old, with an utterly useless integrity for my companion. What a dreadful end to the life of a man who stubbornly loved men, because doing so was the only thing that made sense.

It's also complicated with straight guys doing a massive amount of gay jokes. It's very, very hard to realize what's a joke and what isn't.
But usually in those cases I go by the saying I heard: "The gayest guys act the straightest, the straightest guys act the gayest"

Wasted 6 years of life having a crush on him/being in love with him/ having concerns and thoughts about him but none gone anywhere. I still fantasize about kissing him every now and then but it's just one of those bitter thoughts which convert into an even more bjtter smile and then you just let it go. For the longest time I even thought that my type in men is simply straight guys, or that my type doesn't exist gay. One of the most awesome things about being gay. Having to deal with traumatic experiences that heterosexuals don't even think about.

Thanks for covering this topic. I'm going through the same thing of falling for my straight friend, he is typically not my type, but he is so nice to me and fun be with and listens to what ever I'm going through. it's hard! I want to maintain our friendship and don't want it to get awkward if I tell him how I feel. So, I've kind of distanced myself, by not engaging too much in text or hanging out less often. This has helped me gain perspective and not get distracted to the thought of any possibility of developing a romantic relationship with him. I'm trying to meet other guys that are aligned with my sexual orientation, as distraction from him so I don't get caught up in ruminating. But, I don't see any other solution other than finding someone else or distancing myself from him.

Tom how did you know? I am right in the middle of this. My super cute friend lives with me, knows I'm gay, and is so kind to and supportive of me all the time, it was inevitable that feelings would grow. One thing that has helped me keep it real is not only that he has a girlfriend, but by observing him with his girlfriend. He lights up with her in ways I never see when it's just us. I'm glad for him, and also sad that I can't make him that happy. I'll never tell him my feelings directly because, what is he supposed to do with that? Life goes on for both of us. In the mean time, I give myself space and make every effort not to sabotage our friendship with my big feelings. It can be hard, but it is manageable. And it motivates me to continue looking for my own healthy, mutually-loving, romantic relationship, because feelings like this are not worth pursuing. It feels like your heart is wrapped in thorns, every time it tries to grow, it hits the sharp points and it hurts like hell. And thank you for the recommendation, I just started therapy today 😆 And to any gay men reading this, nurture the longing that nurtures you ❤ Love you guys

A mixture of pleasure and pain for me is what started as a friendly gesture of offering help to a straight man after his surgery turned dark when he talked about his libido suffering as a result and if I could help him with that by performing oral sex since I was gay. I was attracted to him and agreed. That opened up a toxic, painful situation relating to him as more than a friend but not getting the same in return because our sexual orientations are different and for him there was no connection to me after I performed the oral sex. As a matter of fact his actions and demeanor sent the message that being close, supportive and caring towards me was the last thing on earth he would ever want to do.

I have done this multiple times. My first was in high school and based on his behavior and the way it was connected with mine, I absolutely couldn't believe it would never progress. I was in therapy for years.

We stayed in touch for many years but recently, the break was final.

He told me what a toxic person I've become, in his opinion. Anyhow, it's done and it's for the best but I was so in love with him for so many years.

I have repeated this attraction with others, in retrospect. I understand why I did this in retrospect. He and I will never speak again.
