They are feeding us shit so that they get rich and we get sicker. The supermarkets have a lot to answer for. It's utterly disigraceful and dishonest.

This video contains several inaccuracies and misleading framing about the UK fish industry. Note that I have no link to the UK fish or food industry and I won't address the environmental issues raised, they may or may not be true, but the title is 'only 4 are SAFE', not 'only 4 obey my arbitrary rules on potential environmental damage'. I'll address them one by one here - some answers contain AI responses to save me time from typing them: 1. Farmed salmon fillets are not 'dyed'. The colour of salmon fillets comes from astaxanthin, wild salmon get this from eating crustaceans, krill, etc. Farmed salmon have astaxanthin added to their feed. It's the same compound. Farmed salmon fillets are NOT 'dyed' pink, they are pink because of the same compound found in wild salmon. The only difference between the farmed and wild is the source of the compound. Astaxanthin is not merely a pigment — it's an antioxidant with biological benefits, chemically related to beta-carotene (the compound that gives carrots their colour), and it plays a crucial role in salmon growth, immune function, and overall well-being. The synthetic version used in feed is structurally identical to the naturally occurring molecule. 2. Formaldehyde (formalin) is used in fish farms, but it should be noted that in the fish we eat, all fish contain traces of formaldehyde anyway because post-mortem, when TMAO (trimethylamine N-oxide) breaks down, particularly in marine fish, it produces formaldehyde. Standard treatments with formalin have not been found to leave formaldehyde residue in fish above the baseline in the flesh of the fish we eat. Where the issues are fair, is that formalin does have negative consequences for other marine life near the farms - this checks out. 3. Salmon mortality at some farms - this checks out. But note, it is some farms, not ALL farms. However, the framing is horribly wrong. Across the Scottish salmon industry, mortality is 48% on average. But note that in the wild, only about 1% of salmon or less will survive to be full grown. Of course, 48% is still on the high side considering removal of natural predation etc. but even in the best possible scenario, I think expecting much lower than 10 to 20% is probably unfair. 4. On the anisakis worm - here is a single anecdote dressed up to scare people. As he goes on to say, pretty much all fish contain parasites which is why in the EU and UK, fish intended to be eaten raw must by law be frozen first to kill parasites, which is why this is a managed risk rather than a hidden scandal. A handful of cases where processing errors occurred doesn't mean you should be scared of eating fish. 5. Prawns - the title of the video is 'only 4 are SAFE' - the points he make don't undermine their safety, supply chain and ecosystem risk is an entirely separate issue. On the seagull story - it is just a story, and it's highly doubtful - a seagull will happily eat a packet of doritos, I very much doubt it would turn it's beak up at a prawn regardless of the providence - seagulls don't tend to care about how many air miles the food has done. 6. Crabsticks / 'seafood sticks' - true, but I thought everyone knew this? It's not exactly some hidden knowledge. Eat them or not, they aren't dangerous, but I'll happily agree they are gross. 7. Anisakis worms in supermarket sushi. To some degree, this is going to be a risk inherent in eating any raw fish. Japan has around 20,000 cases of anisakiasis a year. United States has 10 - the UK, whilst no official figure can be found, is likely around 200 a year, and consider, that is with tens of millions of people eating sushi from all sources every year. Also, somewhat ironically given his objections, supermarket sushi uses farmed salmon, which is inherently safe because they eat only synthetic feed, not the wild marine life that contains the parasites to start with. This doesn't mean that the risk is zero, it just means the risk is so extremely low, that farmed salmon has a freezing exemption and is not required to be frozen. Overall, the benefits of eating sushi as a healthy lunch occasionally are likely way higher than any risk of contracting anisakiasis from the fish. 8. Fish Pie - doesn't contain any safety concerns. Is 20% fish actually that low in a fish pie? Does that include prawns? I guess if I make a fish pie at home, I might use around 500g of fish for 1kg of potato, then add in the white sauce etc. and 20% to 25% seems reasonable doesn't it? On the cost thing, I don't think anyone is buying ready meals thinking they are a cost efficient option, or if they are, they're idiots. The cost is the price you pay for convenience. 9. Scampi bites - they are gross, agreed, but unsafe? Nah.

Farmed salmon primarily relies on open-net pens, which release untreated waste, chemicals, and sea lice into surrounding marine ecosystems. Furthermore, fish-feed requires harvesting wild species, and escaped farmed salmon threaten wild populations through genetic interbreeding and disease transmission.<br>Waste and Pollution: Uneaten food and fish feces increase nutrient levels, creating deoxygenated "dead zones" beneath the pens that destroy ocean-floor flora and fauna.
