HE NEVER LIVEDTO SEE HIS SONGBECOME A LEGEND

Sam Cooke recorded a song that would outlive him by generations. He never lived to see how far it would travel. His life ended at thirty-three in a Los Angeles motel—but that last night cannot tell us everything about the man who sang “A Change Is Gonna Come.” Before the headlines came the churches of Chicago, the Soul Stirrers, and the extraordinary leap into “You Send Me.” Then came another ambition: not simply to make records, but to have a greater say in what happened to them. Through SAR Records and his publishing business, Cooke became a mentor and a businessman as well as a star. Success did not protect him from the loss of his young son. Nor did fame prevent a Louisiana hotel from turning him away. This documentary follows those painful chapters alongside the work itself: the intimacy of his singing, the demands of the recording studio, and the choices that led toward a song unlike his familiar love songs. We return to the Hacienda Motel, the witness accounts, and the finding of justifiable homicide. Family doubts are acknowledged—not presented as proof of a plot. One terrible night should not be allowed to swallow an entire life. For those who grew up with his records, this is a chance to hear the familiar voice with more of the life around it. For those discovering him now, it begins with a simple question: what was Sam Cooke building when his time ran out? RESEARCH BEHIND THE FILM The script was researched in depth through cross-checks of published biographical material, interviews, recording histories, and reporting on the inquest. That included a distinction often lost in retellings: “A Change Is Gonna Come” appeared on an album during Cooke’s lifetime; its release as a single followed his death. Later recollections are identified as recollections; the film does not claim to settle every disputed detail of his death.
