Curious as to how the museum contacted him after he left. No cell phones back then. Was the phone number for that trailer in the briefcase? If so, then how did he leave the museum and walk into the wilderness and answer when the museum called him.

In 1982, we didn’t have cell phones. Even the “bricks” weren’t available to consumers til 1983… and then only the rich had them. So how did the hotel contact him? So, I read up in his disappearance and it doesn’t mention that the museum ever called him or talked to him.

Don may have experienced a type of dissociative fugue, causing him to hide from searchers and later succumb to the cold. Harder to explain is the phone calls to his friend and the strange responses of the guy with the trailer. Really bizarre case.

If Don were abducted and held hostage in the trailer, it would take a special kind of idiot hostage-taker to accidentally answer 'yes' when asked if his captive is present!
