When he and Lily find an empty compartment, he simply exhales and settles in for the long journey. His father didn’t arrive at King’s Cross to see him off, only his mother. Lily has a bounce to her step, giving him an uplifting smile. He makes an attempt at one himself. She really is one of the only people to get a grin out of him. James Potter: These seats taken? Severus and Lily turn to see a First-Year like them standing at the threshold of the compartment. The boy is a brunette with clear, excitable hazel eyes that brighten when he smiles. Behind him lurks a dark-haired child of the same age, one who gives Snape an acknowledging nod. Lily Evans: No, there’s plenty of room. James Potter (saying it first): I call window! Sirius Black (saying it second): I call window! The brunette lets out a whoop before he slides onto the seat, looking out at the world as it passes the train by. For a few minutes, the two other boys murmur amongst themselves as Severus watches them. There is a ping of disappointment, but he buries it. He shouldn’t have gotten his hopes up about spending the whole train ride with Lily. Finally, the brunette glances at the two of them and smiles. James Potter: What are your names? Lily Evans: Lily Evans. Severus Snape (gloomy): My name is Severus, Severus Snape. Sirius Black: Severus “Snake”? Severus Snape (pointedly): No, not Snake. Snape. James Potter: Lily Evans and Severus Snape. Nice to meet you. I’m James Potter and this is Sirius Black. We’re First Years. Lily Evans: Nice to meet you! We’re First Years too. Sirius Black: Really? And here I thought they let a broody gargoyle on the train. Lily Evans (defensive): Severus is not a broody gargoyle. James Potter: Please excuse Sirius. His boarding was… problematic. Sirius Black: That’s one word for it. Severus Snape: It’s… alright. Mine wasn’t particularly joyful either. James Potter: Well, then you Mopers will get along like sugar and tea. Severus Snape: Did you say your last name was Black? Sirius Black: Yes, I did. What of it? Severus Snape: Nothing! I just… I recognize your family name from books. I… read a lot. Sirius Black: You look the type. Lily Evans (defensive): And you look like you’d be right at home in Slytherin. Sirius Black (sharply): I don’t want to go into bloody Slytherin. I’d be happy being the first of my family to be included in Gryffindor. James Potter (playful, faux-pompous voice): “Oh, deary me. Sirius has been chosen for Gryffindor? Oh, no. My tears are making my tea salty. Whatever shall I do? Quick, fetch me the darkest velvet to weep into!” As James bursts into laughter, Sirius can’t help but join in as he pictures his mother fretting over such a horrifying revelation. The jubilee proves as infectious as Dragon Pox and even Severus can’t help but crack a smile. James Potter: Whoa! Sirius! Severus can smile. Lily Evans(defensive): Of course, he can. Severus Snape: Lily, it’s alright. They are only joking. James Potter: Well, how about this? Since I’m clearly the only one who knows what charisma looks like, I’ll make it a point to make you smile every single day we’re at school. If I fail, I’ll… Hmm… Severus Snape (getting an idea): If you fail, you’ll have to drink some Gurdyroot Infusion. James Potter: Some Gurdyroob? Severus Snape: Gurdyroot Infusion. It’s among the most foul tasting concoctions in our world. Even if you vomit it up, your breath will smell like a festering bog for days. Sirius Black (snickering): And there goes your “charisma”. C’mon, James. They say courage is a trait of Gryffindor. Now’s your chance to prove it. James Potter (flustered): You know what? I will. In fact, if I fail, I’ll drink two Gurdygrops! Severus Snape: You have no idea what you are even saying. James Potter: Yes, I do. I’m saying “Yes”. How do you know about that Gurdygoard stuff? Severus Snape: I enjoy potions… Lily Evans (giggling): He does more than “enjoy potions”. He brews them back at home. Away from the house, of course.
