Walder lies on the mud, groaning as he hears voices all around him from his grandmother Nan, Lord Rickard Stark, and his children. They shout for a maester to come at once and tend to him. Soon, someone comes doddering down, but Walder barely notices him as his eyes grow foggy and shut for a second. Their explanation barely registers, something about a horse. The man in grey shouts if he can speak and Walder’s mouth parts. Walder: Ho, Hodor. The Maester curses and says that it must have rattled his brain. He shouts for them to carry him, but Walder barely feels it; his mind drifts as his eyes close and everything goes dark. That is, until he sees a fire in the far distance at the edge of the darkness. A small campfire crudely constructed and barely illuminating the fallen leaves surrounding it. Walder knows that this cannot possibly be Winterfell. He shrinks back, wanting to run away, but the way it dances faintly in the breeze and crackles before him feels strangely inviting. Before he knows what he is doing, Walder moves towards the fire. Dry leaves crunch under his feet, offering no clue as to where he is. When he draws closer, he can make out the silhouettes of a strange tree. It is like the weirwood in Winterfell’s godswood, but this is far too big. The archway he sees behind the fire turns out to be the roots, stretching out and clinging to the ancient stones of a cavern. Its trunk makes up part of the cave walls, veiled in darkness. Walder stares into the abyss, feeling his fingers close into a fist as he waits for some savage creature to emerge, but there is only silence. So instead, the boy turns back to the leaves on the ground and picks one up. It is almost blood red. Though it is the same as any weirwood’s, something about it feels old, even older than the Winterfell tree. Bloodraven: I hope the foliage is not the only thing that catches your attention, boy. Walder gasps, nearly stumbling into the fire as he looks around to find the source of that noise. He shifts through the darkness, his eyes squinting, but the fire helps him. Suddenly, the flames rise up and shift, blowing towards the trunk and illuminating the face of an old man seated by the tree. The fire reveals he is fused into the roots and bark. Walder (Nine Years Old): Y-you’re part of that tree. Bloodraven: Yes, clever one you are. Though I suppose I should be impressed since you were kicked in the head. Walder (Nine Years Old): I was? Where am I then? Are you the Stranger? Bloodraven: I am certainly strange, but no, you are not dead. I have made sure of that. I am known as the Three-Eyed Raven, and I need you, my boy, Walder. Walder (Nine Years Old): Me? But I’m just a stableboy? Bloodraven: And my grandnephew's protector was a hedge knight, but he became the greatest knight of his age. Your origin means little, only what you can do. He smiles and gestures for the boy to sit by the fire. The Three-Eyed Raven does not go into details as to why he is there or how he ended up in this mysterious cave. All he tells him is this: he is a being of immense power, someone who can see the roots of time as they spread out into the earth, and he has seen the role someone like Walder could play and calls upon him to act accordingly. He explains how the Starks will come upon a child of power, one whose destiny is tied to his, but the boy requires someone to protect him, someone to serve as his knight, and that boy shall be Walder. Walder (Nine Years Old): How will I know who this boy is? Bloodraven: You will know him because Ned Stark shall claim him as his bastard. Walder (Nine Years Old): Lord Eddard Stark is only a boy; how could he have a bastard? Bloodraven: It will come, many years from now. Until then, you must prepare yourself. Walder (Nine Years Old): Why should I help you? Bloodraven (Chuckles): I stopped that horse from killing you now, didn’t I?
