Dylan has an amazing talent but having a father who is able to recognize, understand and nurture said talent is phenomenal.

Dylan was listening to Bach as a baby. I only heard Elvis and TV shows like MASH, Dukes of Hazzard and Star Trek. I grew up with low information. But I didn't let that stop me from becoming the best truck driver ever!

One day i was 8 or 9 i was at my piano lesson. My teacher had me stand there and sing the note she played on the piano. After a minute or two she stopped and told me i have perfect pitch. Later that year I was in the musical South Pacific where I played little Jerome. I went on to become an all state first tenor from texas went to college on full scholarship. I have natural ability to learn new songs to me almost immediately. I appreciate my skill or talent very much

Growing up near a very small airport, me and my brother could tell types of airplanes coming from a distance by sound much better than the local pilots.

I have perfect pitch, and the chord section of this still blows my mind. His quickness in parsing out the chords is so impressive.

When Rick mentioned his son doesn't see color, it fit for me. I have a friend who's an opera singer and an accountant, which seems like a weird combination of unconnected things, but hear me out.

She has always loved music, and she has also always loved and been great at math. And one day she was talking about preparing a non-profit for their annual audit where the auditor afterwards said that in his 26 years as an auditor, this was the first time that they couldn't find anything wrong with their books - they spent extra days doing extra checks of their work because it was so out of the ordinary and unexpected, and they thought they had to have missed something somewhere because the books couldn't be perfect. They didn't find any mistakes.

Anyway, as she was talking about actually preparing the books for the audit, she just casually made some comment about how accounting is pretty easy because you just scan down the spreadsheets and look for where the numbers are the wrong color. Me, being familiar with the term "in the red" being an accounting term, I almost thought this must have been what she meant, but the way she worded it wasn't correct for that, so I stopped her and dug into that revelation more closely.

The reason this one caught my attention was that I had just recently seen a couple of videos on synesthesia, and they all talked about how rare it was. But hearing this from my friend made me curious - I thought, "I wonder.... This could explain her dual interest in opera and accounting/math, and also could explain why she's exceptional at both!"

I'm glad I stopped her and asked. It turns out that she actually does have synesthesia! When I asked her if she meant when the numbers were in the red, she said no, she meant that she just looked at all the numbers in all the cells and looked for the numbers that weren't the right color, because every number has its own color, like a rainbow. She didn't have to do all the math, all she had to do was look for where the color of the numbers wasn't the color it should be - the errors on the books stood out to her like the sun suddenly popping out in the middle of the night would - they were just "obviously wrong".

Then I told her about synesthesia, and she said, "Wait a minute! Are you telling me that you don't see all the colors when you're looking at numbers?!" She was in shock! She had spent her entire life not realizing that this isn't what everyone sees when they look at numbers, and suddenly so many things from school growing up made sense to her that never had before. It was a revelation!

But she also has perfect pitch. And so what I thought at that point was that perhaps many of the greatest musicians out there - particularly those who have perfect pitch - might just be undiagnosed with synesthesia like my opera singer friend.

It makes me curious here with Rick's son. His description that every note "sounds completely different" makes me think it could be some form of synesthesia, or something synesthesia-adjacent which causes those senses to just be hyper-sensitive and "indexed" in some way when they enter or when they're processed in his brain. They may or may not cross the sense boundary, but there may still be a similar mechanism going on behind the scenes that causes all those differences to stand out and be starkly recognizable right away, similar to how most parents can easily recognize their own children out of a crowd of children (other than those with face blindness, of course, who have to rely on things like clothing, size, gait, etc. to differentiate and recognize people).

I used Rick's high information music with my kids and they have become incredible musicians despite the fact that my husband and I have no musical training or abilities at all. It's too bad he didn't continue with promoting the music for babies, but I think there were way, way too many haters, so the the youtube channel geared towards adults made more sense. People aren't ready to adopt real change from geniuses like Rick.

My wife wore a prenatal speaker while pregnant with our now 15 year old. I played Mozart and Bach regularly...might have thrown in some Grateful Dead and Little Feat :). Our daughter certainly doesn't have Dylan's ear but darn close to perfect pitch and amazing music retention.

Last year a Four Seasons song came on and she started singing it. I asked where she had heard that before and said that grandma played it in the car once. My mother has dementia so doesn't drive and so she would have heard that maybe 7 or 8 years ago. Knew the melody and words perfectly. I was floored. I'm putting all of her homework to music!
