  In America you actually want an older house because of how shoddy new construction can be. An old house has stood the test of time, you pretty much know what you’re getting. A new house on the other hand may have serious issues with the foundation or roof that will take 5 years to show up, and by that time you’re stuck in it

  i lived in Japan in rhe 80s &amp; early 90s. nearly all japanese houses have metal roofs; but no ridge vent to circulate air between the ceiling &amp; the roof.<br>dripping condensation causes the house to rot away in around 30 years.

  Cool video, one point though. The issue in the west isn&apos;t JUST government interference and NIMBYism; at this point a significant portion of American public investment has a vested interest in the continued growth of real estate valuations. That is to say, other large lobbies representing real estate developers, landlords, hedge funds, and even various pensions represent an increasingly greater financial and political force dedicated to limiting housing accessibility in order to artificially inflate the value of their own holdings. People aren&apos;t stupid, they have a material incentive to create this unsustainable system.<br><br>There&apos;s a reason 2008&apos;s crisis had its roots in real estate, and it was never truly resolved. To put the majority of blame on western homeowners or &quot;government&quot; broadly is to ignore the greater systemic issue.

  I saw recently a video where a woman bought one of these 1 dollar homes. She wanted to rebuild the home and live there. But was told she was not allowed because it was a historical area. No new builds allowed. Something like that anyway. And she warned against the cheap/free homes as they might be protected and it may be illegal to fix up, rebuild or live there.
