Growing up in the New Orleans area Camille and Betsy were spoken of often. After Katrina, not so much, and I appreciate the history lesson for storms that are approaching 60 years of separation from today.

As a little girl, my mother rode out Camille with her family in Poplarville, Pearl River County. Many homes were destroyed, and they survived by holding on to trees and bushes. From the research I did, winds reached 150 mph in the county.

My dad was a freshman at Jackson State in Jackson, Miss. He said it got really dark during the day, and the hardest rain he ever observed fell in the city.

Fantastic video! Camille doesn't get as much attention as more recent storms, but as a young hurricane geek reading everything I could get my hands on in the 1990s, she was the absolute queen!

Wow! I didn’t know this about Camille’s affects in Virginia, so similar to what NC and TN suffered with Helene!

As a child on a road trip through central Virginia shortly after Camille, I vividly remember seeing what must have been miles of flattened trees from the storm. I’m so sorry that people living in that region apparently had little warning about what was to come. Thanks for this well-done video history of the storm.

I was 9 years old living directly on Mobile Bay in Fairhope AL a cross the street of Orange Street Pier. I remember the day of the storm brought incredible high tides almost covering the piers. Fishing was great. It brought incredible high tides and fish you usually don’t find regularly in the bay. Then the electricity went out at night and the winds were very strong as you could hear stuff flying around outside. My sister said she could hear the roof of Legion Pier collapse and fly by the house that night. Will never forget that storm and we were 90 miles east of the eye at landfall.

Rain is indeed an impact. The exact same thing that happened in the Blue Ridge region of Virginia happened in WNC with Helene 55 years later

Also on the famous bulletin in which Robert Ricks compared Katrina to Camille in terms of its possible destructive power, I watched a documentary that came out around the 20th anniversary of the storm that touched on an older couple who lived near the Mississippi coast who chose not to evacuate because they remembered riding out Camille without much issue. They had to hide in their attic amid rapidly rising water as they had falsely anticipated that the decently sized bayou/retention pond in front of the town they lived in would catch the extra storm surge because they thought they lived far enough inland, even though this pond/bayou was connected to the gulf.
