Good info. My issue is a weak wrist throughout the entire swing. Definitely going to take this video and a few others and merge them into what I need to do to keep a strong wrist and behind the ball release.

Excellent video. The best information I've been given to date about the challenges, and fixes, for aging bowlers. I'm just getting back into bowling after 25 years and almost everything is a struggle, but staying behind the ball is an absolute key to successful release.

I've used a behind the ball release for many years because it is the most accurate way to release a ball and get a good strong pocket hit.
I've tried other releases but being behind the ball is the easiest to duplicate for best and most consistent results. On very few occasions
do I ever "turn the ball" and then only slightly when the lanes are heavily oiled. Normally, I have a lot more hook than I need, even though
I use a Spy and a Torpedo Direct Hit, which supposedly have minimal hooking potential. Only issue I have is with balance and at age 77,
this is not at all unusual. Still bowling in 2 leagues each week, still averaging in the mid-190s. Not too shabby for an old man. I did go
to 14# balls, though, but not because of what this video says. I did that to gain a little more ball speed and thereby more kinetic energy
for better mixing and pin carry, particularly on the corner pins. Still leave some wrap-10s, though, which tells me the shot was slightly
to the right of where it needed to be. My Spy works well as a 10-pin spare ball via letting it slide off my hand with no lift applied at all.
This shot comes from the left side of the lane and my target is a couple of boards to the right of the 3rd arrow from the right. If I do
my job, this works real well, and my 10-pin covering has improved a lot.

Enjoyed the video. I'm a senior who's gotten back to bowling after a very long layoff (I was a duckpin bowler originally, so turning the wrist was very common). After watching many YouTube videos, the things I found most useful were "behind the ball", especially using the ring finger as the thing to focus on. A very big one (I'm still working on it) for me was to keep the swing close to my slide foot; otherwise I thought I was dropping the ball but my strike shot which starts on the right side was veering to the right and I was releasing the ball in the gutter! Trying to step to the inside with the first step of a 4 step leaves a "slot" where your backswing can stay close to your body. Also trying to keep head level, as if you bend forward, you'll chicken wing it (turn you wrist from the outside in) it and it will hook into the left gutter. Another good one was Mark Baker whose best advice is usually is usually a sentence and not a 20 minute video: "imagine keeping your swing from the back toward your target in a line - you can hardly miss!" (well, sort of).

i notice i get slow at the end of each game and i must remind myself to feel like i'm going faster and now why my ball doesn't react the way it did when i was young.

There's never any help for old-time straight bowlers; I even read one thread where the guy talked about us screwing up the lane's oiling. Nice attitude; bowling wouldn't exist without us first. Do you have any videos on that? My shoulders are wrecked, my hand and fingers have bone spurs so that I had to get the hole drilled larger, and yes, the OIL really screws up a great shot for us since most everyone else is creating little channels that move our ball out of the perfect slot it was headed for and into another non-strike when it should've been one. Thanks.

I tried working on staying behind the ball today and it just didn’t seem to work. I have been told by so many teachers that you still have to rotate your hand at release to get the ball to hook into the pocket yet this video and another video I watched last night said to stay behind the ball all the way through release and my ball went straight almost every single time so I am sure I wasn’t doing it correctly yet thought I was

PDW is probably the worst example of staying behind the ball. Pete uses more axis rotation than just about any other professional.

But good video aside from that
