Great video Ashton.. me and my brother did exactly that same walk in the early 90s.. it looked very different back then and not so many trees.. wish we had the technology or the savvy to film and document more. We didn’t even take a camera that day

Thank you Ashton; very informative; your video goes someway towards explaining why the "Thames Clyde Express" that I sometimes travelled on between South Yorkshire and Glasgow back in the mid 1950's would sometimes vary its route south of Leeds into either Rotherham Masborough or Sheffield Midland. Even behind a steam loco in those far off days, you could still taste, see and smell when you were back in South Yorkshire, nearly home!
Happy days I remember once coming back over the Settle Carlisle section and we had a crew in our compartment who had just taken one of the first diesels up on the line, route learning. What impressed them, and us, was their experience of the power available compared to a double headed steam train. Apparently they had to keep "throttling back" to stop it running away, even up long uphill gradients - fascinating. I guess that would have been mid 1960s....🤔

Excellent video Ash, it brought back so many memories of my childhood in the 50's. Me and my mates BOMBER BOLTON, BILLY HOOLEY, MALC WASSELL., KEN GREEN, we all lived up Darfield Rd, we used to go down the banking and often walk from the bridge where the farm is, in the cutting near the first bridge is where we all had our first cig's, I didn't like it so never got into the habit. We used to go over the viaduct and go through the tunnel, boy it was scary as trains still ran in those days. We then would go on the Single track line through Storrs Mill Wood and train spot where the Dearne flows under the main line.
They were fantastic days, so sad to see the young generation now just playing on their phones. They certainly were the best days of my youth.
Thanks again for the excellent video.from Ernie Bailey

I'm a retired BR Manager and grew up in Ecclesfield and Chapeltown. My interest in trains was kicked off when I was a nipper in Ecclesfield watching expresses coming through - clearly at weekends and diverted via the Chapeltown loop. I can vaguely remember where Monkspring Jn was and recall being able to see an old tunnel portal that had taken the line under a hill. That view is now long gone, as is so much of the railway infrastructure of my childhood. I started my railway career at Rotherham Masborough before moving briefly to Sheffield Midland before moving away from the area. I travelled over both Midland routes to Leeds via both Barnsley and Cudworth. The Cudworth line had a renaissance in the 1970's and Southwest - Northeast diesel trains used it. It came out at Goose Hill Junction, south of Normanton, where there was a signal box. This video is interesting because I never saw anything of the Chapeltown loopline myself. The former GC line through what was Ecclesfield East station is now also a footpath and I've walked it.
There's a cracking preserved blue brick viaduct at Overton on the Midland Railway's former Dewsbury line. If you haven't already been there, it might be worth a look.

33:04 the viaduct passes infront of you infact you got the layout wrong because you were following the stairfoot bed not the chapeltown loop the viaduct started where you assumed the signal box was it followed to the path you took then crossed over the road & bed infront of you from left to right at an angle & headed to what was the old B&Q there is traces of one of the bridges infact doncaster road had 3 lower & the viaduct above them,
its also nice of you to use the info i passed about the location of tunnel portal & where the infill came from as this was a regular route for me when i use to live in donny,
something else you slipped up on which was the grimethorpe cutting it duidnt pass beneath the lundwood viaduct it had its own bridge just past the viaduct its totally infilled now & you wouldnt know it were there because even the bridge it passed beneath is long gone

No mate - the bricks aren’t red and painted blue . Blues were often a browny red colour inside - the high firing temp gives the outer part of the brick a blue colour that is like a glass hard finish. Hence they last for longer
