The real horror of the movie was seeing what Alex went through, it genuinely put a pit in my stomach. Kudos to the young actor for doing such a fantastic and believable job with the role as well. Glad Alex was the one to give Gladys her comeuppance.

The opening narration specifically said they "never came back" which I think means they never fully came back to their former selves after being gone for so long

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2Pwi8zyVRk&t=257">4:17</a> I've seen this line get criticized a lot because the kids do get returned to their families. But I think the point is that they never fully go back to who they were. The kids are all still extremely traumatized and catatonic. They never "came back" to their normal selves.

The scene where she gets inside the car made my entire theatre gasp, and everyone laughed a few seconds later because of the collective fear. 10/10 experience

Things I have come to realize with some discussion and thought:<br><br>- Aunt Gladys wasn't related to anyone in Alex's family. She says she is the mom's sister, then Alex's aunt, then the mom's aunt. The dad says he barely knows her and says it's been like 15 years but Gladys says she saw Alex when he was little (a lie). She is also far older than we think (the consumption comment would make her from the 1800's at latest) which brings me to... <br><br>- She wasn't sick, she was old and using the life forces of the family and children to stay alive. She was a parasite like all of the background talk was discussing. She tried using the parent's essence to keep her young, but it didn't work so she moved on to the kids. This is probably not the first family she's done this to. <br><br>- The time spent under her spell determined your recovery. Alex's parents were under the longest so they were catatonic forever. Some of the kids recovered and some didn't (they were under the second longest). Archer recovered immediately since he was only under like 10 minutes.

Say what you will about the movie, but Zach Cregger understands the horror genre! He understands that it's not just jump scares that should be used to terrify you. Affective imagery and slow scares are the best. That scene where the mother (while possessed) walks out of the door with the knife is the type of bone chilling stuff I want to see in horror movies.
