When I was a kid, I couldn't figure out how to get arrows. An older person visiting my house told me oh, I saw my kids playing that game. They hit a tree and arrows fell out. I proceeded to roll in to every tree in the game, hoping to unlock the bow and arrows.

Those are the kinds of experiences you got with pre internet gaming.

The world building and continuity they put into the first 3D Zelda game is very well thought out for its time.

As much as I like the Talon/Naburu theory, I think the Gerudo and Goron mask responses from Talon are just him trying to say his wife is fat + red haired. Offspring of Gerudo females are also Gerudo females too - and since Malon is clearly not Gerudo, it kind of sinks a hole in the theory...unless I'm missing something...

I think Talon says goofy things because he drinks a lot of "Chateau Romani" (or whatever it's called in OoT). That's why he's sleeping in the middle of the day and Ingo is able to outfox him and steal the ranch while he's plastered.

I always thought Talon was a drunk because he would go to places where normal people wouldn't and "take a nap"

If you roll into the deku tree 255 times it underflows and you get the triforce. Trust me I saw it on a geocities site

I think it has to be that the Gerudo mask is so… uncanny in it’s resemblance to the platonic ideal of a Gerudo that it both looks like all Gerudo and no gerudo at once

I see people have already suggested something like this, but I think that rather than Talon suggesting that he was married to a Gerudo and/or a Goron, his reactions to the Goron Mask and Gerudo Mask might be that they remind him of certain characteristics of his wife — like that she might have had red hair, a round face, or tan/brown skin; or that she gave the impression of quiet strength, as Gorons and Gerudos both do when they're being friendly. So, that could leave open the possibility of Malon's mother of being Hylian, and just having those traits.

Now, I do like the idea of Malon being a descendant of the Gerudo. I've also heard theories point to the fact that Lon Lon Ranch is a little closer to Gerudo Valley than to any other settlements in Hyrule, so it might have been a place where the Gerudo would naturally stop by. I think I also remember someone pointing out that the designs on Malon's skirt and blouse resemble designs you can see on Nabooru's clothing — though that could mean anything from saying that Malon's clothes used to belong to her Gerudo mother; or that she finds Gerudo women pretty and graceful, so she wants to dress a little like them; or just that Malon bought some Gerudo-made clothing once.

I also think it's an interesting idea that Malon could have been left with her father because Malon was a rare Gerudo descendant who didn't manifest purely Gerudo genetics, and she showed more Hylian traits instead. Or for whatever reason, maybe she didn't seem like she would do well in a warrior culture, so she was much happier living on a farm, helping her father, and caring for animals.

But there's one big counterpoint to the idea of Talon's wife, Malon's mother, being a Gerudo: Malon's hair is a very different shade of red from the hair colour of the Gerudo. Gerudo have a deep, slightly cool shade of red hair. And as I look this up, Malon's hair colour (copper, orangeish-red) is very uncommon in Ocarina of Time . Some of the Kokiri, and a few Hylians (including Link and Zelda themselves), have strawberry-blond hair (i.e. blond with a little bit of reddish tinge). Some Hylians have dark reddish-brown hair.

The interesting thing, though, is that there is one ethnic group in Hyrule where some of its people have a hair colour very close to Malon's: the people from Kakariko Village. This includes the Potion Shop owner, the Happy Mask Salesman, the boy in the graveyard, the "very rich family" who have been transformed into Skulltulas, and that person who sits on the roof and watches Death Mountain. So... if anything, Talon's wife may be from Kakariko, and Malon may even be a descendant of the Sheikah. (Granted, this was before it was established that Sheikah generally all have white hair, and that white hair wasn't unique to Impa. So, this might not hold true anymore.)

Anyway! Thanks for sharing these theories. They were fun to listen to. (Oh, and by the way: for years, I thought the Hylian loach was a hoax... until I was playing the 3DS remake, and I saw and caught one. I took a picture to remember the occasion. Heh. That was a fun memory to remember today.)
