Do you think structural batteries may start to make their way into consumer technology? I don't know if structural batteries are the final answer, but they're definitely something to build on.

"Kinda like Boeing" That made me laugh, thanks!

Love that you started putting these TRL scores at the end! It's great to hear about new developments but it's also important to see where they stand in this long and deadly process to bring it to consumers.

I loved the dig at Boeing and "opening doors". It made me smile.

I do believe that we will see an inevitable transition to mold-able batteries. Converting my 1970 Lotus Europa has shown me how rectilinear batteries waste huge amounts of vehicle space. They fit, but could fit much better. As a retired pilot familiar with aircraft structures I can see the benefits immediately. heck, just imagine how beneficial it could be to have 8' 2x4 batteries to incorporate into building structures. A whole house could be a battery.

in general i wish the industry would focus more on recyclability, imaging a car that is 100% recyclable, without having to to use highly complex and toxic methods to extract the resources, it might be a less fancy and potent car, but you can repair it and take it apart with ease, now that's a future i would love to see.

This is cool and all but imagine you have a bad cell in the frame of a car.

How exactly would you replace it?

A main issue with the way structural batteries are thought, is that they tend to be very non-universal in nature. This automatically slows down adoption potential immensely, because you need to have the capacity to either commit to doing it inhouse yourself, or have enough base capital to hire an external specialized firm to do it for you. Unlike current battery approaches where the pack itself is customized, but the core component (the cells) are widely universal and benefit from ease of adoption and price competition. Without these aspects, you prevent a lot of players from being incentivized to invest into the tech until it is fully mature and already market proven. For major commercial companies however, it is a good avenue to experiment in, not in terms of making a traditional battery pack obsolete, but rather as a way of making the existing total EV package more efficient and better integrated.
