"Almost cut my Hair" was an anthem.  It's hard to imagine now but anyone with hair touching their collar was considered a freak and was ostracized.  Big time.   When he said he didn't and says he felt like he owed it to someone, he was standing up for fellow freaks and not bowing to the establishment.  I lived through it and it's still hard to explain the 60s and what was happening.  Some good, some bad.  But it was a happening.

IMHO, you are listening to Neil Young with a Gen-Z mindset. I don't know if it is possible for your generation to truly understand, but if you are willing to try,  close your eyes, take a deep breath, relax, and try to imagine listening during a time when everything felt raw, natural, and unpolished (unlike today's need to have so much music clean and clear, processed and autotuned...) At that time, the emphasis on much of the music was feeling and understanding. The lyrics were key, but in all, music was truly a celebration of all that was real and natural. Neil young's voice fit into that era perfectly - real, unfettered, relatable, almost yearning at times... Neil's lyrics and voice speak to my heart...

You said, “This sounds great for 1970”. It sounds great BECAUSE it’s 1970. ❤

It's all a matter of personal taste, but I love singers like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Tom Waits, not in spite of their voices, but because of them.

Stephen Stills is the star of this album and every album he's ever performed on. Phenomenal and underrated guitarist.

Young's voicals are emotive. You can feel the emotion, the joy, uncertainty, sadness. His voice is an accompaniment or highlighter to the words.

"We are stardust; We are golden..." I miss feeling this way about our world and my fellow man - the last decade has put my optimism to the ultimate test.

Neil Young was 5 years old when got polio. Helpless is a song describing his depressing situation in his illness. Try listening to it with that in mind.

The 60's and 70's were a time of rebellion and Neal Young's voice was a rebellion against the clinical, and polished style of so much of our music.
