It is defined in no acoustics standard, it has no agreed exponent, and two generators calling their output green noise may produce quite different signals. Anyone telling you there is one correct green noise is guessing. The common thread across the usages that exist is midrange: green noise is described as the noise of the natural world, centred somewhere near 500 Hz, the region occupied by wind in trees, moving water and distant surf. THE MATHS Underneath the band pass the source is pink, so within the passband the density still falls at about 3 dB per octave and carries roughly equal energy per octave. The band pass is a two pole Butterworth section with a centre frequency of 500 Hz and a bandwidth of 3.2 octaves, which gives a smooth 12 dB per octave roll off outside the band with no ripple inside it. The result is a spectrum with an actual peak, which none of the true colours have. White, pink, brown, blue and violet are all monotonic: their energy only ever goes one way as frequency rises. Green is band limited on both sides, and that is what gives it a recognisable centre of pitch instead of merely a tilt. Slope: no single slope. Defined by a shape rather than one exponent, so there is no beta to quote. WHAT PEOPLE USE IT FOR The stated appeal is that it sits where natural ambience sits, so it reads as being outdoors rather than as a machine running. People use it for relaxation, for reading, for meditation and as a gentler alternative to white noise when brown noise feels too heavy. It also happens to be well placed for masking speech. Most of the intelligibility of a voice lives between about 300 Hz and 3 kHz, which is very close to this passband, so green noise covers a conversation through a wall using less total energy than a broadband noise would. It should sit under whatever you are masking rather than over it: if you have to raise your voice over it, it is too loud. Turn it up until the sound you want covered stops bothering you, then stop.
