Almost all of its energy is in the bass and the treble is nearly gone, which is why it sounds like heavy rain on a roof, a distant waterfall or the inside of an aircraft rather than like hiss. The name has nothing to do with the colour brown. It comes from Robert Brown and Brownian motion, the random walk of a particle in a fluid, whose displacement over time has exactly this spectrum. Integration in the time domain is division by f in the frequency domain, and dividing the flat spectrum of white noise by f gives 1/f in amplitude, which is 1/f squared in power. A random walk is not stationary: its variance grows without bound, so an unrestrained brown noise generator wanders off towards the rails. Every practical generator therefore leaks the accumulator or applies a high pass, which is what keeps the level steady over eight hours. This one is high passed at 18 Hz and gently low passed at 14 kHz, where there is almost nothing left anyway and where lossy compression does its worst. Slope: -6 dB per octave. WHAT PEOPLE USE IT FOR Brown noise has become the most popular of the family for sleep and concentration, and its low centre of gravity is the reason. It is widely reported as helpful for focus and has a large following among people with ADHD, though that evidence is anecdotal rather than clinical. It should sit under whatever you are masking rather than over it: if you have to raise your voice over it, it is too loud. Turn it up until the sound you want covered stops bothering you, then stop. Overnight, move the speaker away from your head rather than turning it up, and take particular care with a child in the room, since a sound machine close to a cot can run far louder than anyone intends.
