Good example of why continuous exterior insulation is such a strong baseline move. Once thermal continuity is there, a lot of other details get easier.

I had rain screen in one of my houses. Worked very well. <br>In summary, we had ice & water shield over the entire conventional OSB decking, then 1x2 furring strips, then another layer of OSB over the 1x2.

We have an old farmhouse in Ohio. Needed a new roof. Had loosely spaces boards with shingles. Had a roodinf company that does commercial flat roofs as well. Asked about putting insulation board with sheathing over the boards before new shingling. They said they had never done that before, but liked the idea. Said they could use the sheathing they use on flat roofs. The foam board is 3 1/2" thick, bonded to i/2" plywood. Was screwed down to the rafters. Added a few extra thousand to the cost, took them an extra day. However, we're three years in and it has made a unbelievable difference. Keeping a thermometer in the attic, there's always at least a twenty degree difference in summer and winter. Had it done on our detached garage as well. Makes it bearable to work on stuff in the summer, and makes it easy to heat the garage up in the winter. TBH, was pretty proud of myself for thinking of this.

We have done two different approaches, first we did rigid foam on roof rafters and nailed sheathing over top, closed cell sprayed under neither. Second we hung a sub rafter under main rafters to create depth for dense pack and a thermal break.
