I covered the wee fokker last week and this video is about the bigger fokker. The reason for that is because you all keep sending these suggestions in. I really appreciate everyones thats sent a request in, i promise you im getting to it theres unfortunately a lot of accidents that need to be covered. On the 5th of january 2004 a fokker 70 was on the ground at vienna and it was about to fly to munich. The plane took off from vienna and cruised over austria and then eventually the plane crossed into german airspace. The pilots were busy in the cockpit planning for the approach into Munich. As they got handed off to munich control the pilots were told that theyd be using the NAPSA 26 arrival into munich, for this to work they were told to descend down to 10000 feet and to drop to 220 knots. Even though the flight had been normal so far the pilots were worried about icing this low to the ground. So as the plane dropped to 10000 feet the pilots turned the engine and air frame anti icing systems on. As the plane leveled off at 10000 feet the pilots noticed ice building up on the windshield of the plane. They checked the wings out of an abundance of caution, there were these black strips on the wings that would show any ice build up and it showed no ice. But as the plane flew through the clouds they noticed that the plane was beginning to shake. Not much, just a tad. As the pilots checked the fuel quantity they noticed that the engines were vibrating more than they should be for this phase of flight. Both engines were still in the green but it was something that was out of the ordinary. But the pilots could now dwell on that too much, they were 12.5 nm south of munich and the controllers had now cleared them down to 9000 feet. The plane had also been cleared to a heading of 020. But as the plane dropped the right hand engine started to vibrate even more than it already was. The pilots extended the speed brakes and then pushed the engines to a higher power setting. This was done to make sure that the fokker 70 wouldnt pick up too much speed. They hoped that the higher power setting would flush what ailed the engine out. But it didnt work a warning popped up on their displays “vibration high engine 2”. They carried the abnormal procedure for high engine vibration checklist out hoping that they would be the end of that. The engine seemed to be holding. But the vibrations did not go away, they could feel the plane shake as they descended towards munich. But then the left hand engine gave out, the EPR or the engine pressure ratio a measure of how much thrust an engine makes, well not quite but its close enough dropped all the way from 1.5 to 1.1 and the fell to 1.0. This meant that the engine was producing very little if any thrust. But they were in a descent and they didnt need a whole lot of thrust. But out of an abundance of caution The captain declared an emergency and requested an immediate landing. The pilots were cleared down to 5000 feet and to a heading of 080. The crew wanted the shortest possible approach, they didnt want to be in the air for any longer than necessary when they had so little altitude to work with and one engine that was having issues before all of this kicked off. But then the unthinkable happened, the right hand engine failed as well. The controllers at munich now cleared the plane all the way down to 3500 feet. The controllers set the crippled plane up to land on runway 26L. Silently the plane dropped from 5000 feet to 4000 feet, they extended the flaps on the way down. They pushed the throttles up but it didnt do much. The cores of the engines spun up and the exhaust temperatures ticked up but no additional thrust was produced. The pilots coaxed the plane towards the runway, they had the runway in sight but the controller told them that they were 500 feet below the glidepath. The GPWS was now warning that they had terrain up ahead, the pilots got a don't sink warning. But unfortunately they had no option but to sink.
