Credit to the attendant for raising it with the flight deck!

This is one of those extreme rare cases when an overbuilt can actually be so good that it perfectly masks an impending failure, because it continued working long after it failed. This is both really good, and very terrifying

"Think of it as the plane had a stroke". That's even funny to those of us that have had them!

That's why we need human pilots as well as automation.

This was a very interesting incident. For a while there I thought you were telling us that two completely unrelated failures had occurred at the same time, which is improbable. But then it turned out that one of the failures had existed for some time, and didn't make any difference until the right hydraulic system failed. This left the pilots with problems they couldn't understand, but they figured out by trial and error what the plane could and couldn't do, and made a successful landing.

Well this was another incident I was not aware of but still good to see it being finally covered!

That was fascinating. The only thing that ever worries me about aeroplane flights is that some mechanical failures can be very subtle to distinguish from regular wear and tear.

Thanks for this. Never heard of this one but it shows how a failure that can be classified as “routine”, like hydraulics, for which the pilots are well trained can take an ugly turn due to another undetected failure at the same time. Well done to the crew.

Icelandic here. I'm pretty surprised I had never heard of this.
Btw, only the brave attempt to pronounce Icelandic, so hats off to you sir. Bláfjöll just means "Blue Mountains" (Blá: blue. fjöll: mountains plural, fjall: mountain singular).
Other mountains in the area include Litla-Skarðsvíkurfjall, Stóri-Reyðarbarmur and Laugarvatnsfjall, lucky they weren't involved 😉

I really enjoy your storytelling style.

The accompanying animation adds a lot to the narration, and by replaying across the conclusion as if the flight had finished successfully... Wow.

That's always poignant, and never gets old.

Keep up the great work!
