A bad jump starter can do more than leave you stranded—it can put your car’s electronics at risk. I have a NEXPOW Q10S cheaper than the one in the video and it has helped me and my neighbors to jumpstart dead batteries several times.

Double checking the Q10S, it has a Force Start Function button which is designed to jumpstart a completely dead battery.

Good breakdown on jump starter dangers. The part about DIY power tool battery hacks frying ECMs is real - a fried engine control module on a modern car can run $1,500 to $3,000 at a dealership, sometimes more. That's the kind of surprise repair that wrecks a budget fast. If your manufacturer warranty has already expired and you're worried about electrical system failures down the road, it might be worth looking into a vehicle service contract. CarShield has an Aluminum plan that's specifically oriented around electrical and computer-related components, including engine control modules. That said, read the sample contract carefully before buying - exclusions and deductibles apply, and not every scenario gets approved. It won't replace a good jump starter, but it's worth comparing if unexpected electrical repair costs are a real concern for you.

Thanks for the informative video. Wolfbox sounds like my choice. I had a unit that looked like a fat flashlight. Got it years ago on markdown at Wal Mart for $10. Took forever to charge, but once it was charged it jump started several vehicles, including my son's semi. Used it to jump start a mower and ended up running over the the cables. Think I've found my replacement, thanks!

The part about frying a $2,000 computer module with a bad jump starter is real, and honestly underrated as a concern. ECM replacements on modern vehicles can run $1,500 to $3,000+ depending on the car, and most drivers don't think about that until they're already holding a repair quote. If you own an older or higher-mileage vehicle where the manufacturer warranty is long gone, one electrical failure like that can genuinely wreck your budget. Some people look into vehicle service contracts like CarShield specifically because of electrical system coverage - things like the engine control module, alternator, and starter can fall under certain plans depending on contract terms. Worth reading the actual contract carefully though, because exclusions and deductibles vary a lot. Point is, protecting against that kind of surprise expense is worth thinking about alongside which jump starter you carry.

I have a CAT 1200A from costco that is probably 3 or 4 years old. Have used it on my 18 Accord with a parasitic draw so the battery was so low there was no lights or sound or signs of life. The CAT did a great job and didnt do any damage at all. BTW, the boost feature is used on numerous jump starters and works just fine but i guess its only a problem on the Avapow and a feature on the starters being promoted.

My problem is that our state has a no idling law. I live in a city and I can only walk short distances, I can't walk on icy or snow covered sidewalks. I am handicapped and yet our city will not pay for people with handicaps to use what we call SSTA which is a free service for the elderly or disabled that towns around us all provide if I lived there and now that I am 66 I would get door to door service. My vehicle is dying They will only pay for the service if you are on Medicaid. I don't know if letting your car idle will help to recharge the battery and I hope someone responds who knows more about vehicles than I do. Our weather has changed and we get sleet and freezing rain and because we have weird weather patterns it can be snowing 5 miles away and with a 4 wheel drive I don't worry because I've been driving on lousy road conditions since I was 15 and had a beat up old Toyota Celica in 1975 and my Dad just put bags of sand in the trunk. This past winter I left to visit a friend and I was in a town less than 10 miles away and the time that I was there it was snowing but our city got sleet and freezing rain and then the temperature dropped and it all froze and the snow followed. When I got home the drive way was ice underneath the snow. I fell and broke my leg. Do you have any idea how hard it is to use crutches when your back is pinned due to an assault that damaged your spine sufficiently that they had to pin it. I ended up buying a walker instead.

So with my vehicle which I love because I bought it from down south and it had only 38,000 miles on it and it had some dings in the rear bumper where the owner in trying to launch his boat off of his trailer made some errors but I didn't care. The price was perfect for me but it is a 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Track XL and it is great in snow and believe it or not I do furniture restoration and if I find something really cheap or free I have neighborhood teens who love to earn extra money and will come with me to get the piece or pieces and I have a large heated shed set up with pulley systems on tracks that I designed based on my needs with the help of a retired engineer. I use an adjustable wheeled office chair and it may take me longer to restore a piece but I used to do upholstery for extra income and that sucked so I taught myself to do furniture restoration with the help of YouTube, Wookworkers of America Guild and having watched my late Father build cabinets and furniture and repair or restore furniture on occasion so I had the foundation I just needed some reminders. Now Brutus, yes I name my vehicles, has problems which someone who knows Fords really well told me would happen and in the winter if I buy another vehicle or lease one can I start it and let it idle to keep up the battery or do I go broke using Lift and Uber since the city drove our taxi service out of business. Just so you know my first car was named "Bondo Baby" because I did a lot of body work after watching my older brother and his friends do it. So please, if someone could let me know about the idling I don't care what the city says I will fight the fines using my own medical records.
