  About Beckwitt: he was originally charged with both second degree murder (30 years maximum, no minimum in Maryland), and involuntary manslaughter (maximum, not minimum, 10 years). The murder charge was dropped though and the sentencing for involuntary manslaughter was reduced. Whatever way you look at it, he got far less than he deserved.
