It was, after all, the first Soviet tank design that was more than just a marginal improvement over the T-34. However, despite being significantly superior to the T-34, this was also its downfall, as the Soviets wanted to keep the T-34 in production due to the ongoing war and therefore de-prioritized the T-44, deciding to start producing it in an only recently liberated and mostly wrecked factory. Blueprints supplied to the factory were also incomplete. This led to the early T-44 tanks to be of severely poor quality.<br><br>Now, regarding the fact that it was sidelined for the T-54, it should be noted that the T-54 project had been ongoing while the T-44 design was still in progress. This was because it was realized that the 85 mm gun was insufficient against heavier armor and a 100 mm gun was desired. There were two projects to upgrade the T-44: the T-44-100, and the much more involved T-44B, which increased the size of the chassis, thickened the armor, and introduced a larger turret design to accommodate a 100 mm gun. The T-44B project was soon renamed to... T-54! All of the amazing attributes that were present on the T-54/55 series (armor layout, torsion bar suspension, transversely mounted engine, compact/serviceable powerpack entirely at the rear, efficient use of space, etc) were directly lifted from the T-44, since it was initially a modification of that design. And we know how the story ends: the T-54 beat the T-44-100 in trials and went on to be the most produced tank in history.
