Passengers should not be subsidising crew wages. I have no issue with tipping, but being told I must pay is a no no.

I agree. Include gratuities as part of the fare. I'm watching this 09/2026. All those daily charges are now $1.50 more. My cabin went up to $24.50 pp/pd. I did lock my next cruise gratuities in advance and saved a little bit. I don't automatically tip more. I do that to those that step up above standards. But that ends up being many anyway.

According to actual cruise personelle they have a contracted amount with the cruiseline. They get paid thier contract nothing more. The only way they actually get tip above the contracted amount is if a guest pays tips directly to the person in cssh

This is a huge consideration if you're coming from a country where your currency is almost R20 for 1 dollar.

I don't tip. I choose not to be a default co-employer, evaluating performance and doling out wages. I'm on vacation. If the cruise line increases their price by $20 a day and pay their staff slightly more, I'm fine with that. It's honest.

20+years ago, we tipped cash in an envelope provided by the ship and gave them directly to cabin attendants and dining room waiters. the cruise lines told u the suggested amount of tips. At that time they never mentioned about we need to tip the behind the scene staff and why now they always mention about it to make u pay the automatic tip system.

Food for thought. Do you go into the kitchen at your local restaurants and tip the cook or dish washer? No, but the cruise industry tells you YES. For Celebrity go to guest services on day one and ask to remove the gratuities. We pay cash to our room steward, waiter and assistant waiter. We usually give above the 18.50 a day PP. A receint video noted that the crew has to report cash tips and turn them in to be distributed. We asked our room steward directly and he informed us he gets to keep the entire amount to himself. The automatic gratuities are in fact not gratuities at all, they only go to pay the contract amount, nothing more. The "gratuities" are just subsidizing the employees pay, so just an added FEE to you disguised as gratuities.

I was told by my travel agent that the price of the pre-paid gratuities is added to the total price which raises your travel insurance.

I don’t tip as it’s not part of our culture like America. Just pay staff a decent wage and stop gratuities

Do the onboard gratuities add to the crew's contract amounts (as a true gratuity) or does it help the company pay the crew contract amount? In other words, does the crew member get just the contract amount whether or not people people pay the onboard gratuity amount? Thanks.
