There's a ton going on here but it's kind of wild that he never understood that Dr. K wasn't telling him that he thinks objectively, but that he represents his subjective experience as being objective.

comparing this to the Lupo situation is actually really interesting. They're both basically playing chess, but Lupo's "ego'" is a knight piece; he can afford to lose it in order to win. Thor's ego is his King piece. He can't lose it without everything else collapsing around it. He is either self-aggrandizing or stroking his humility and there is almost no downtime between.
