The Onion from Pikmin 1 and 2 were the same exact Onions but the ones from 3 and 4 are confirmed to be different sub species and in 3 the Pikmin are stated to become liquid while in the Onion and the different colors moving around are all the different kinds of Pikmin

i always liked the idea that onions are a form of fungus and pikmin are the spores it creates, but as we’ve never seen an onion come to be, we don’t know this.

I may have said this before, but here is my theory regarding the Onion's life cycle:
An Onion starts its existence as a Pikmin of its color. When plucked, it would live the rest of its life as a Pikmin, but if it were to stay in the ground for long enough, maturing from leaf to flower then back again over and over enough times, it would finally become a Candypop Bud. It would then await for Pikmin to fall or be thrown in it, converting the Pikmin to its own color, and exchanging genes in the process, because if (in Pikmin 4 at least) the Pikmin that fall in are the same color, it doesn't wilt, needing proper genetic diversity to move on to the next stage. If it doesn't meet this genetic quota after some time, it will likely become a Flarlic, but if it does, it will become a fully grown Onion.

It also seems like it has some kind of intelligence on it's own, since it can recognize when Olimar is alive or death and it will not consume him into more pikmin when he's alive since it just spits him out again, and at the same time it can consume living organisms as when it consumes a Ravenous Whiskerpillar it will turn it into more pikmin despite it not dying when it's defeated

2:00 technically “the seeds” for onion consolidation started in pikmin 2 with the purple and white pikmin living in the ship

I think the onions evolved the ability to combine after captain olimar use the multiple Pikmin types at the time

One of my favorite things about Pikmin is how much effort it puts into its creatures. All of the scientific notes are so cool and make the world feel so much more real. I always wanna know more about PNF-404 (and the Hey Pikmin planet lmao). Though I don’t really like Pikmin 4 and there are a lot of reasons for that but one of them is how it took away the post apocalypse aesthetic from PNF-404. Also I love your avatar. It’s so cute

my personal head canon is that the onion is the fruit of the pikmin flower, a Pikmin sits rooted and consumes nectar to develop it's flower (the candy pop bud) and is then pollinated and starts to fruit, the fruit is the onion (as I just said) the onion producing seeds only upon being fed is because constantly spewing out seeds whenever takes a lot of energy, so it uses it as food to make a lot of energy to reproduce whenever
