The NHL Will Never Let This Happen Again

I can appreciate the argument that the hits delivered by Scott Stevens were "hockey plays" during the time, but the fact that targeted head hits were allowed is unfathomable.  Paul Kariya was truly a player before his time, in that if he was drafted in today's NHL, he would be competing for an Art Ross Trophy.  Concussions are no joke, and robbed an exceptional talent a long playing career.

Nearly 30 years later and headshots are STILL a major issue in the NHL and the league STILL shows almost no interest in handling this problem.

Imagine how well prime Kariya & Selänne would do with todays NHL rules. 120+ points both easy

I’ve lived with post concussion syndrome for six years now. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone, it needs to be taken very seriously

Shane Willis's career was ended by a single horrendous head blow from Stevens in 2003 as seen in this video. That same night he knocked out Hurricanes Captain Ron Francis. The fans were so angry they started throwing objects over the glass and a friend feared a riot would start. Francis came back, Shane willis never played another game in the league. The Hurricanes offered Shane positions off the ice, he later joined the broadcast team and is today still beloved by the fans 15 years later.

I'm not sure what's more gross, the fact that these organizations showed zero concern for the safety of players until they actually had to start paying them good money; which in itself wasn't about safety but protecting investment or hearing said organizations claim they didn't understand the potential issues of concussions when I, my friends and my coaches talked about and understood the issues of concussions when I was fourteen playing sports in 1980; yet somehow the NFL was ignorant of said issues.

I grew up in Vancouver, the Canucks naturally have always been my team, but Paul Kariya was my favorite player. His career being cut short is such a tragedy.

Kariya is one of the biggest badasses in hockey. Such a talented player. And he can't remember his biggest moment. I hope he's found peace and quiet after all he gave to this game. And I hope that someday, in some capacity, he comes back. It felt right when Kariya and Selanne got inducted together.

As a kid growing up in Maine , living in Orono (umaine) we got to skate and play with lots of guys who made the NHL but paul at age 18 was a different kinda dude .. The way he played a d saw the game was nuts .. To this day I've never seen anyone do the things he did just in pick up games and messing around .. Also made me re thinking becoming a pro when I wss the best player on my team and then seeing him 3-4 years older understanding the levels ..I didn't feel bad just understood what greatness really looked like
