As a relatively new hockey fan, I love these historic videos. I had heard Lindross's name, but didn't really know much of the story, and never even heard about Kariya somehow. Hope they're doing alright today, but like you said, live by the sword and you'll find yourself at the other end of it someday

I still remember that hit on Paul Kariya. Go figure Scott Stevens was involved with both him and Lindros. That call from Gary Thorne still gives goosebumps.

honestly its just a testament to Sid the middle aged man - i legitimately didn't think he would continue his career

One thing to add on that Crosby injury. Part of the lingering effects were due to him also suffering an undiagnosed soft tissue neck injury at the same time as the concussion. It remained undiagnosed for nearly a year

I was there for the Paul Kariya hit and goal. We legit thought he was dead, that's how stiff he was when he laid on the ice, and I remember the Pond showering Stevens with boos, and the sentiment that it was a late hit/ blatant cheap shot. At this point the Ducks had dominated the Devils in the game, and there was fear it was a momentum shifter. But then 11 minutes later, the place cheered when we saw Kariya get back on the bench.

His slapshot that ripped to the top shelf happened 7 rows in front of me. I'll never forget the emotional crowd pop the building had when he did it - loudest I've ever heard. Hands down the most amazing thing I've ever seen at a Stanley Cup Final game... and I was there 4 years later when the Ducks won the cup.

It's such a shame though that hit was the turning point of his life in general. That moment he was on pure adrenaline, but obviously not the same player even for game 7. IT took the dude years to reconcile his time with the Ducks and his career. I cannot imagine how it must feel for him every time a fan meets him and mentions that goal and where they were for it; and he has zero memory of it.

Nowadays with concussion protocols, moments like Kariya's will never happen again. And if that means their careers go longer, and they don't develop CTE which can lead to self harm, or the evil actions of a certain pro wrestler in 2007, then it's for the best.

A "mild concussion" is one that happens to someone else. I've had "mild" concussions and they weren't mild to me.

Absolutely wild to think that Scott Stevens affected the career of not 1, but 2 HOFers

I had a concussion while snowboarding 14 years ago, and took about 2 weeks off from work afterwards. Post-concussive symptoms had me in and out of hospital for a year. I don't think I've been the same person after that, and I'm not even an athlete. I can't imagine suffering multiple concussions in a year and only having a couple days of a break before being thrown back into things. Please take care of your brains, people. They're fragile, and it's too easy for people take them for granted (or assume they can heal as easily as a broken bone).

If we're talking about ALL collisions, Joni Pitkanen's career-ending heel injury that changed the icing rules forever should be mentioned.
