  Hey, Alaskan here on the &quot;one vehicle&quot; path. Our roads are gravel and salt for far more than half of the year in my area. Someone else mentioned it, but fluidfilm lanolin coatings saved my vehicles from being rusted to death. But something that will also help that may seem obvious is to WASH YOUR RIG. Wash it good, get underneath with your pressure washer and get in every nook and cranny, especially the nooks. Also worth getting your engine bay detailed on a hot dry day so it evaporates better. Its not magic, but they are cheap and small steps that will help your life WHEN you need to repair something. Having a non greasy engine bay is a blessing.<br><br>A few other obvious tips besides the basics(fluids,tune up,hoses, wires, steering), make sure your brakes and headlights are 100% before you make your vehicle pretty. It makes sense to be able to see hazards and stop. Maybe even adding aux lights to help you see.<br>Im also a beleiver in heet additives in winter, and seafoam once every six months. Its not perfect but its something. <br><br>I chose a 2wd as well. Lighter, easier, less maintenance, and slightly better mpg. But its not for everyone. I keep a set of tire chains for the rear, and do trucking for a living, dont really need 4wd even here in Alaska. <br><br>Cheers, loved the vid.   True and it&apos;s not just that you have to work on older vehicles, but you have to like working on your old stuff. If you don&apos;t like working on stuff don&apos;t get an old truck.

  I&apos;m 60 years old and I bought my 94 c2500hd long box brand new still has the cast iron 5.7 tbi with 300k miles on it and besides basic maintenance the only thing I did was give the engine a refresh on gaskets and seals ,I replaced the cam and crank gear with a double roller and I left it at factory stock height and being its a Texas truck no corrosion!😊

  I love the late 90s Tahoes and suburbans. &nbsp; The engine bays are surprisingly easy to work on as far as room I mean. &nbsp;I could stash my tool box in the engine bay if I wanted too.

  I drive a 79 firebird esprit, simple &nbsp;decent on fuel, drives like a dream.<br>It&apos;s been reliable for 9 years.<br>It was very well looked after before I got it, and I really went through it &nbsp;mechanically before putting it on the road

  In the 80’s I bought a really rusty ‘78 Chev c20 pickup at auction for $300. &nbsp;It was a 2wd with a straight 6 cylinder. &nbsp;I was young and broke and I needed a car to drive to work. &nbsp;I knew NOTHING about mechanical repairs. &nbsp;The water pump failed one day and I was broke and had very little money. For $32 I bought a water pump at an auto parts store, I had a pliers, screw driver and a 2 x 4 for leveraging to tighten the fan belt. &nbsp;I changed the pump in 20 minutes in a parking lot. I drove that truck for about 4 years while I saved money. A water pump and 2a rear tires is all I ever put into that truck.

  We used to go camping at Little Grassy Lake a lot back in the early 70&apos;s. Crab Orchard too a couple times. My dad went to SUI back in the 50&apos;s. Love that part of the country. Lot of kin folks from there.

  Great video - made me smile. &nbsp;I didn&apos;t think a GMT400 was a &quot;SquareBody&quot;. 😷Bought my forever 94 k1500 Blazer in 1996. &nbsp;AZ car, no rust, no body damage, LM7 swap in 2023 at 270k. &nbsp;Pull a boat with 5 people and a couple dogs, or load it up with half a ton of construction material, it barely notices. &nbsp;I&apos;m mid 70&apos;s and expect it to be fine for a couple more decades! 😀 Body was near perfect until a 600 lb+ Big Bambi tried to take it out in June. &nbsp;It looked totalled, but thanks to junkyards and good paint was mostly recovered in a month. &nbsp;It helps to be able to &quot;do anything&quot;, mechanical, bodywork, paint, interior, and even junkyard trolling for parts. &nbsp;Maybe someday 3d printing for all those plastic parts. 😷 I&apos;m not in the automotive sector, just do it for fun. &nbsp;I encourge more people to take up the challange, but a solid - and fixable - truck is needed to make it worthwhile.
