The 300 straight 6 is the real practical affordable option. Just as indestructible but much cheaper, more efficient, and gas is much cheaper

I'm still rolling an '02 7.3L. No emissions. Works hard. Burns alternative fuels. No payments.

The most important purchase I ever made regarding automotive is this, an education/training. It was just about 20,000 to go to a certain automotive trade school. It was great. I really valued the experience. I made some good friends there. I really took it seriously, I got straight A's and perfect attendance. I went on to work at a Toyota dealership. But moved on to land surveying. I don't work on cars/trucks anymore for a living. But I can't even say how much I use my education. I work on my own cars and keep them running. Im able to help my friends and family with their car problems. I love being able to help it's a great feeling. I have been able to get us out of emergencies. Fixed a busted cooling system on our work truck so we didn't have to get stranded all night in a farm field. Little things like that have been so valuable to have this knowledge. It has kept me from overpaying for services or buying lemon used cars/trucks.

I know you can acquire this knowledge without paying for an education like I did. But this was 20 years ago when YouTube was brand new. And it didn't have all the wealth of information it has now. All in your pocket.

In my home state of Michigan, any truck from the 80's was rusted out 30 years ago. And once rust starts, youll never stop it.

I bought a 1987 F250 4X4 brand new in 1987. It has the 6.9 and a C6 automatic. I never put a turbo on it. I still drive it every week, to this day, in 2026. The truck has more than 600,000 miles on it now. The AC is ice cold. I have rebuilt the front end 5 times, and resealed the motor twice. A couple of injection pumps, a couple of water pumps, one set of injectors. I own several newer Ford Diesels. They are all more fancy, more gizmos, etc. But my favorite, by far, is my old 6.9. It'll get me there. I won't get there fast, at least compared to newer trucks. But I'll get there.

Man I’m so excited to see a shift in the overland/bug out rig space of going back to simpler vehicles. I’ve been building a 90s 3/4 ton suburban with much of the same idea for a year or so now. It’s large, fits all of my family and the necessities, and worst case scenario has the payload to tow a trailer no problem.

Next big project is a solid axle swap just to have a beefier front end, then after I drive that for a bit I’ll swap a 12 valve into it with a manual transmission to make it ultra reliable and sustainable!

I look forward to watching this progress and keeping the attitude that it doesn’t take a 150 thousand dollar investment to build a solid bug out rig!

a good idea is to keep extra starters, alternators and water pumps plus other similar parts in stock at your house.. The ship backlog in Long Beach harbor awhile back showed us how easily logitic systems can get jammed up and the oarts stores may not have parts in stock
