  One detail not mentioned here, is Magee became something of a celebrity among the German soldiers, and was regularly visited by German pilots. &nbsp;He also recounted how the German Military doctor told him directly, &quot; &apos;we are enemies, but I am first a doctor and I will do my best to save your arm.&quot; &nbsp;At the time there was question of whether or not Magee would lose his arm due to injuries.

  I was a teenager living in Port Arthur, Texas in 1957. I sold newspapers in the mornings when the shifts changed at the Gulf and Texaco refineries in Port Arthur. Most of the men I got to know had served in WW2. One short and rather robust guy had been a B-17 ball turret gunner. He told me about some of his experiences. He mentioned that the closest he came to death was when a German shell had hit his ball turret crossing from one side to the other as it passed in front of his face. Another fellow I got to know was a young infantryman who was captured during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 and remained as a prisoner until the end of the war. I&apos;m 83 and I think I&apos;m fortunate to have known a number of the members of the Greatest Generation including my dad who was an infantryman wounded in the Hurtgen Forrest battles of 1944 and my uncle who was a young Marine who fought on Iwo Jima and Okinawa in 1945. Most of them never knew that they were part of the Greatest Generation.
