Trivia: in 1969 gold was $41 an ounce. So $4m in gold is about 97,560 ounces. Today the price of gold is about $1220 an ounce, so today that much gold would be worth around $119m dollars.

How they escape:<br>They run the bus until the petrol tank at the rear is empty, then all jump out. The bus with the gold still inside goes over the cliff, and is collected by the Mafia waiting at the bottom - and stealing it back was supposed to be the plot of the sequel.
