AMP MODELERS ARE DEAD? NAM Still Has a MASSIVE PROBLEM That NEEDS Addressing

I think nowadays a lot of guitar players are too busy chasing tone to actually sit down and make music.
I’m a bit old-fashioned. Back in the day, I had a Vox AC30 Hand-Wired. The way we used amps back then was simple: in the rehearsal room or at a gig, that amp sat in the corner, you dialed it in, and you didn't touch it. Maybe you tweaked the volume slightly from time to time, but usually, you wouldn't touch a single knob for the entire show.
We’d put a piece of painter's tape on the faceplate to mark our favorite spots without scratching the amp, plug in our pedals, and use the guitar’s volume knob to shape our sound. Nobody was constantly changing deep amp settings on the fly.
Technology is going crazy today, but for someone coming from the classic analog world, NAM captures are perfect. I can just treat a capture the exact same way I used my real amp—set it, leave it alone, and play.

Yes but. Fractal user here, but I discovered a Beatles-era Ac-50 that I’ve loaded on a Valeton GP50 and on my Genome iPad app and it sounds as good as anything the top digital modellers offer. I’m living in Brazil and gave my GP50 to a local kid who now has access to amp tones he could never dream of because of import duties and wages. The global market is who will make the most use of these. And the players here are unreal. The average kid here will never have access to Fractal, NDSP floor models. But now can access the best of the best because of Nam. Just like a plugin manager, an AI curator will be along shortly to solve this problem.

What makes captures work for me is that I hate tweaking. I just scroll through some captures I like and spend the day playing.

When was the last time you took an amp to a gig, and had to dial in different tones for every song? We don't do that. We live with a single amp with a single set of settings. So, when it comes to captures, its not about having "the full breadth" of what the amp can do - its about finding the capture that works best for your needs.

Making a full amp is serious work. It's a world of difference compared to a single capture. We make full amps, and it takes months to get them right. Finally, someone is talking about it here. Great video!

I feel you’re describing if only Fractal was the usability of the QC or Stadium. You wouldn’t be sorting through random people’s captures or buying them. You would just have them.

I think it’s about future proofing your modeler. Instead of Line 6 etc giving you a new amp every year or two in an update, you’ll be able to add or capture whatever amp you like long after they stop doing updates.

Thanks for this, this is a really good critique and given me much food for thought on how to improve NAM discoverability and management in my the NAM oriented DAW I have developed called Taype

Akai studio instrument collection is a great example of organized varieties with sample audio that plays on each sound variation, so the user gets an idea of what the preset sounds like before ever committing to using it. So, hypothetically, you could have a UI that is as clean and visually stunning as Akai's - but with guitar sample that plays when you 'preview' a sound. The next problem to solve would be having samples for each guitar pickup arrangements etc. - which can be done quickly with community submissions.
