  It's the "Robocop" level of satire where it could just as easily be enjoyed as a dumb action flick, but you notice the message in the back of your mind. I think this is the best kind of satire, because even the people who don't catch the satirical tone still tend to latch on to the messaging.

  Casper Van Dien (Johhny Rico) is one of those actors that  more than 30 years later still embraces the fanbase for this movie.

  "I don't know what the tone of this movie is". That's a perfect description for all of Paul Verhoeven's work.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcfX_oQM8bc&amp;t=2275">37:55</a> This movie is a brilliant use of the trope &quot;The Monsterous Other.&quot; The movie says the bugs are the bad guys, and that&apos;s so easy to believe because the bugs are just SO inhuman. They are scary and alien and ugly, and therefore they all deserve to die. The &quot;it&apos;s afraid&quot; line hits so hard because for most people that&apos;s the first time you think about the bugs as thinking feeling entities.<br>The satire is so obvious if you replace the bugs with more humanoid aliens, or even just other humans. Especially with Americas invasion of the middle east, the insane level of Islamiphobia it operated on was no different than how the Mobile infantry treat the bugs. <br>The group think promoted by the military industrial complex relies on &quot;othering&quot; the enemy to the point where they don&apos;t even register as human anymore. Even before that news reporter about how humans attacked first, there is a little snippet in the beginning where it is shown that Mormon missionaries began the conflict by trying to colonize the bugs home.<br>It&apos;s darkly prophetic with how this movie captured exactly how the &quot;war on terror&quot; went. American invaded the middle east first, supplied groups like ISIS and the Taliban with weapons and training, and then used 9/11 as justification for further conflict. (Just like the meteor hitting buenos aires.)<br>American Drone strikes killed more innocent civilians each week than all the deaths in 9/11 in totality. The line &quot;The only good bug is a dead bug&apos;&quot; is absolutely chilling in hindsight. 9/11 was such a galvanizing force because to America, we were taught that &quot;that sort of thing doesn&apos;t happen here&quot;, its an unthinkable crime if it happens in America, but an acceptable loss if happens to our enemies, because after all, to us they aren&apos;t even human, just a monsterous other, just a bug.

  I swear, Dina Meyer in that backless, silver dress during their graduation dance, was an incredibly defining moment for me as a young man. &nbsp;She was genuinely stunning for me in that scene. &nbsp;She&apos;s gorgeous throughout the whole film, and teenage me was forever grateful for her going topless in that film but....damn, that dress, and the look in her eyes. &nbsp;Just, the definition of &quot;smoldering redhead&quot;.

No one else I know has seen this movie so they don&apos;t get my references while we&apos;re playing, it&apos;s genuine pain lol

  To this day I can&apos;t for the life of me figure out what kind of technology the VFX team did because the Arachnids look so goddamn good, the CGI/animatronics blend in so well, it&apos;s insane.
