One thing that’s really been helping me is not just a single reference track, but a reference playlist
Cuz I can’t think of any single mix that I want to copy. But I know that if my mix can fit in on a playlist of the best and not stand out as sounding weird or amateur, then I’ve succeeded.

I just started trying to record my music a couple of months ago. I stand firm on the notion that if I can't put out a product that sounds good with Reaper and free plugins then I'm doing something wrong.

I am a noob at mixing and such. But the most important thing imho about this is understanding how each instrument or vocal track sits in the mix based on it hz value. Each track needs its own "space" within the mix. This is obvious to most of yall but some people dont get it yet

I think the whole "chasing gear/plugins" trap is 100% necessary. Ultimately you'll end up with just a handful of favorites, and of course you need to master the basics of what's already in your DAW, but I've only found what works for me by exhausting options and finding the common issue (my skill). It's nice that I also found some really helpful tools along the way.

I mean...If you've ever hear Devin Townsend's "Ziltoid The Omniscient," that album used a Line6 POD for all guitar tones and Drumkit From Hell for the drums.

I learned a long time ago to do the "no plugin challenge". the funny part is that some of my oldest productions are better than some of my recent mixes because I had so much time to really curate the sounds and mix with the arrangement. It's been a really interesting challenge balancing efficiency with the result I'm going for. I think a lot of people (myself included) get jaded by mixes we really like from the pros that we forget what actually does sound good. There's nothing worse than a cheap imitation of something that is objectively amazing. This is what I feel makes the industry competitive and keeps the music and production alive and breathing.

I did URM academy over five years ago when I was in the oilfield and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

When I played metal, I’d record my guitars into the DAW clean. It’s easier to see how tight it is without distortion. I’ve I got that tight, I’d add the bass guitar. Same way. After that’s all tight, I’d add the plugins and compression (light compression).
