As a guitar instructor I absolutely love how this can be boiled down to:
Use a metronome until you hear it in your sleep

When I was a teenager information were difficult to reach. Now it’s way easier to have tutorials lessons and other stuff basically for free and that’s why the average guitar / bass player is insane. Been playing and writing ✍️ songs for 21 years and can confirm this

Guess it brings back the conversation on whether we want actually human nuance and latency that allows guitar players to distinguish themselves from one another, or if we want to chase an overly perfect accuracy that gets us closer to sounding mechanical.

I'd say a middle ground is ideal.

I am older but love modern style riffs and leads. I grew up in the middle of nowhere and only had magazines. I learned decently on my own. Enough to play in bands in the big city. I quit for awhile and youtube became a thing. It definitely helped me pick it up again and reinvent my playing. But I had some burned-in bad playing habits there were and are still hard to overcome. I always say if I had youtube when I started, I would be a much better player. I'm not one of those "set in my ways" older guys that bag on these newer tools. I use new tech. I love my Fractal and still have real stacks in the garage. I learn something new every day.

This has happened in almost everything. Sports are litterally so precise its insane, also for ex bmx riding a backflip would be crazy 15 years ago. Now they can do like a tripple backflip tailehip 360

This is spot on. I have somewhat of a unique perspective because I didn't pick up a guitar until my 30s. My buddies who are my age and who have been playing for 15+ years always tell me I've progressed at a crazy fast pace. But being shaped by IG has had a huge role in that. Every post is guitar perfection. I didn't even know editing, speeding up and miming was a thing until recently. So chasing that perfection has done so much for my playing. The only way possible for me to get to a level that I perceive is good is to dedicate hours a day of focused practice for 15+ years. I thank Modern Guitar for this.

This is a great video on my points, the accessability on the internet
is so vast that it is a wonderful time to be a guitar player in the modern era.
As innovative as the modern guitarist is, I still have not found anything that has topped the creative
Genius of Jason Becker. He started composing "Air" at only 14 years old and recorded it at 18 in 1987.
That's absolutely mind boggling.

Yea, I agree. It not just gear, although you can get a better guitar for less these days. Ok, here’s my opinion from recent experience ( I’m mean current recent :) ) I’m 60, I started playing around the time the original Star Wars came out in the theaters. I played up through the mid nineties, then put it away for a long time. I played bass for a couple of cover bands, but nothing really. Had two TIA stokes and could sync my hands anymore. Recently I’ve been re- learning. I’m improving much faster than when I learned originally as a kid, and that’s due to the availability of learning resources, not equipment. I’m learn theory without even really trying, I think it’s incredible. This is what I feel is valuable about the internet. It can be a great learning tool for a lot of things.

It’s awesome to see so many young people taking up musical instruments as the Svc hooks diverted funds away from music. Thank goodness for YouTube. I have certainly re-ignited my love for playing. There is in inexhaustible supply of lessons, demo’s to learn any song or technique you want. I appreciate YouTube very much. Gear reviews, and the priceless comments are invaluable.

All true, I started at 8 yo. At 11 my dad found me a Berkeley guy as a mentor, I was blessed. So I started at a higher level than most guys around. He taught me it was all about playing great rhythm guitar, then work on soloing & recording. Writing/Producing……..How to get sounds & make a tube amp work. I was blessed. Now imagine if he would have had the internet when he started? Then he could’ve started me at even a higher level* #1 thing, there’s something about ear training you get taking a 33 record to 16 and learn it and transpose it!!! He dead on, record yourself and listen to it! He’s right about everything he said. Also very important to listen to your favorite players over & over!! Learn all styles/like them or not! It will come in handy down the road. I could say several more things, I have to go or I’d write a book on this. You’re in good hands with this guy, he knows what he’s talking about!!!
