It's actually crazy how much emotion plays a part in playing well.

Don't forget about the reverse mental state that I sometimes go into. Just acknowledging how bad you are at the game without learning why you lost. Give yourself some credit guys the game is hard keep at it with an open mind and you'll make progress!

Man taught me more in 1:30 than my mental health teacher did in 3 years

This is really good even for those who play on games other than Splatoon. I might show this to friends who play chess.I feel that this is a great mindset for all kinds of tournaments

"GGs shake my hand" is probably more triggering than a simple "GG"

So important. My team is in the midst of holding tryouts right now and it is such a massive turn off if in the face of difficulty and challenge, a candidate gets audibly frustrated and upset and gives up. My team is a low level team. We lose more often than we win but we are continually working to improve as individuals and as a cohesive unit. Sometimes we play very solidly, other times not so much.

Getting my 4 year old nephew into this game definitely made me learn this. Always being ready to soothe him and coach him through his anger and tears when he is losing. Helping him learn that its ok to feel bad as in disappointed but to understand that he needs to remain calm in order to play his best possible. He sees the difference right away several times, he gets upset and starts crying, I calm him down and tell him to regroup and back away from the combat then move in when he is ready. Suddenly he starts winning 2v1s and he is all happy and cheering again. But its a lesson that needs to be kept up and reinforced in every play session I can be there with him, I mean he is still a small child after all.

Gonna talk about the emotional health thing from a perspective of someone with involuntary anger issues. I tend to get extremely mad, for little reason, or for things normal people wouldn't be as mad over.

Even as I congratulate my opponent for winning, I am seething underneath the surface, and I don't want to be, anger is a toxic and gross emotion that taints my day every time I feel it, and I try and never take it out on those around me, but instead of just living with it I still try and prevent feeling the anger in the first place, due to the fact that, as said in the video, negative emotions drain you.

If you are struggling with those feelings, try and change your framing so you aren't as invested, or make sure to compliment your opponent in your mind as you play, just as an example here.

Try thinking "damn, that charger got a great peak shot on me, they are holding down the fort well" as it allows you to keep healthy, and it allows you to go into "and I'll have to adapt by taking a route out of their line of sight" and play smarter.

And try and stop yourself on a rant like "WOW! COOL! Great shot how long did it take you to line up from your damn ivory tower as you rely on the crutch of bad map design, need more wide open areas to shoot people like a barrel of fish!?" as this is just working yourself up, you'll not only play worse, but feel worse after, and have less fun, there is no gain, just effectively taking out your frustration on yourself and taking emotional friction and turning it to emotional gridlock.

Try and keep positive, and if you are having a bad day and can't, do something to make your day a bit better, instead of doing something that is making you angry, and get back to it when you can enjoy it.

learning about mental state and controlling it is pretty interesting as i do notice the differences in my own play and emotions when i try to be positive compared to getting all salty. its applicable not just to splatoon, but to fighting games like guilty gear and it helps a lot

I knew that tilt was a thing before and it negatively affects performance, but it wasn’t until recently I learned that sufficient anger actually shuts down your prefrontal cortex. Tilt literally shuts down your ability to reason

My little cousin (7 y/o, first grade) likes to watch me play splatoon sometimes and I really like using it to encourage her to be more optimistic and honest, especially since her sisters and parents can sometimes be asses. She’ll say “it’s ok if we lost because we both had fun!” Or “we got so many medals!” And I do my best to keep her excited, even if it’s just turf war. Sometimes she’ll choose my weapons and gear, or sometimes I’ll pass her the controller and let her play, but she’s okay with handing it back if she’s getting frustrated and will just me “I don’t know how to play that good yet”. It’s really fun and I like playing games with her a lot.
