  The 'spalted' craze cracks me up. I worked in a small mill in the Connecticut River Valley in Connecticut in the '70s and early 80's. When we ran into a 'spalted' log, the mill owner would cuss. "The damn things rotted; toss it in the burn pile before it's worthless." Now it's an in-demand specialty premium lumber. 'Uncle Bud', the mill owner, would be rolling his eyes. "Sucker born every minute."  lol

  Try not to be negative but whoever is using a rope on a log that size is not being very smart at all. Okay there's a thing called the choker chain and you wouldn't have had to ruin the log by cutting a notch in it so the Rope wouldn't slip because a choker chain will not slip they're only $35 okay they're not that expensive so go get one Mark you need it

  Spalt?? I'm not sure what that means could you tell it to me and I just found the elm tree in Vermont that I had to cut down although it was only three inches in diameter I have about a 12 ft piece of it and I'm letting it sit and dry I don't know if I'm going to use it for the barbecue to cook something I don't know what I'm going to do with it by elm trees in Vermont are coming back in full force🎉🎉🎉 I've been saying it for a long time I cut one down on an Old Farm probably 10 years ago and it was a big elm tree and I sold it to my friend who has a father that has heavy equipment operating and he used it as decking on his big lowboy trailer it's better than oak because it isn't quite as heavy it's gnarly and naughty so it makes it a lot stronger and I don't know why a lot more people don't use it for the decking on their lowboys because in Vermont that's a big thing well I should say it used to be

  I wish I would have saved the smallest pine cone I've ever found in my life it was no bigger than a quarter it was super tiny and I really wish I would have saved it I'd send it to you for the gnome

  Fascinating! But that log roller does deep damage with those hooks, eh? BTW: I make tool handles and various small products with spalted orange. Yeah, orange! Including laminated mouthpieces for my didgeridoos!
